Advice re meds for newly diagnosed

Hi. Please can someone advise on timings for taking carbimazole x3 per day and propranolol sustained release x1 a day. With or without food? Take them together or apart?

Any advice until I get to see an endocrinologist would be greatly appreciated. I feel dreadful.

Carbimazole can be taken with or without food. You’ll just need to divide consistently throughout the day. EG 09.00, 16:00 & 23:00 what ever fits in with your routine.

For propranolol, you just need to ensure you take it the same time every day, especially as yours is modified to slowly release throughout the day.

Do you take any other medications? or any supplements.

Thank you. I take nicotinamide 1000mg daily for skin cancer protection and a general multivit.

There is quite a lot of advice on here about Multivitamins they are not recommend as they often contain the least absorbable form of the supplement. Many multivitamin contain Iodine which is best avoided when you have thyroid issues. Does yours is contain biotin? Biotin can affect the testing process in some labs and can skew thyroid results.

I not familiar with nicotinamide and do not know the best time to take it, if it should be taken away from other medicines and how is it best absorbed. Check the advice.

Not sure what 'carbimazole x 3' means - it's usually prescribed in multiples of 5mg, but 10mg and 20mg tablets are also available. The starting dose when prescribed by a specialist is often 40mg day or even 60 mg day (although the higher dose is usually prescribed together with levothyroxine as part of a 'block and replace' approach). GPs may prescribe lower doses to take the edge off the situation pending referral to an endocrinolologist, but sometimes prescribe higher doses, perhaps on advice from a specialist.

The larger doses may be split into two doses per day, but not usually three (altough this may be appropriate with the alternative medication, PTU, which has a shorter half life). The most important thing is to keep taking the medication and be reasonably consistent about timing. When I was prescribed 40mg day, my endo said to split it into two doses, but if I found that I was forgetting the bedtime dose, it would be better to take the whole lot once a day than keep missing doses.

It's really important to read the Patient Information Leaflet for Carbimazole, and you can also read more about it here btf-thyroid.org/antithyroid...

Hi. It’s carbimazole 10mg prescribed 3 time’s a day - morning, afternoon and at night. So 30mg a day.

Thank you.

so the really important thing is to take it regularly. If you remember three doses a day, fine. if you forget, go with a routine you will remember (so long as it is definitely carbimazole and not PTU). However, if you've got 10mg tabs and tremor in your hands (quite a common symptom), spltting those tiny tabs (eg so you can take two lots of 15 mg)may be an issue. Food timing shouldn't matter, nor should taking it alongside propranolol, unless your GP or pharmacist have told you otherwise.

Do you have a copy of your blood test results ? People here may be able to help you understand them.
