I’m looking for anyone who has Graves’ disease and knows anything about the subsequent eye surgery. I was diagnosed with Graves’ disease in February this year. It also affects my eyes, with them being a bit starey. Not bulgy but definitely appear “wide”. I have seen an eye specialist and am on medication for my overactive thyroid. The eye doctor mentioned surgery and that it would be my decision so I’d like to understand more about the procedure, remission and how others have been affected. Thank you in advance
It is my understanding that surgery is only considered after the TED has entered the recovery phase. My eyes were quite badly swollen with bulging and double vision and unable to close at night. However after 3 years they are almost back to normal. Hopefully since your TED appears mild surgery will not be necessary but wise of you to start learning about your options. Look out for going hypo after treatment with carbimazole. This happened to me and caused my TED to become more severe
I posted an article today about drug therapy for Graves eye disease that you might find interesting - I have Graves but not eye disease. Have they suggested drug therapy for you before the surgery to see if that will help you?
