Weak, not ill (apparently)

These two articles have angered me, so I'm venting with this post:

news.sky.com/story/michael-... (allow obese people to die, to save the NHS money)

news.sky.com/story/patients... (medical student's prejudices against overweight people)

Although they talk about prejudices against obese people in general and they aren't specifically about the thyroid, a lot of thyroid patients get lumped in with these sorts of attitudes.

It's a catch 22 for the thyroid, because if you're slim, then your thyroid clearly isn't broken, and if you're overweight, well you're medicated, so you must just be lazy...

Such ignorance! He doesn't even know that high cholesterol is not a serious illness and has nothing to do with how much you weigh!

When should I plan to top myself then, to keep Michael Buerk happy? My total cholesterol is 8.3, I refuse to take statins or worry about it at all, and I'm on the cusp of being overweight/obese based on BMI.

I wonder how many children Michael Buerk has had? If he's had any he has added to the over-population of the world. Should people with lots of children be refused medical treatment, perhaps? Or those who take part in sports and have needed the services of doctors and hospitals several times during their lives? What about drivers who speed? Should they be allowed or required to die too? They might run over Michael Buerk one day - can't have that, can we? Once you pick a group of people as being unworthy of medical care you never know where it will end.

Michael Buerk clearly finds fat people to be disgusting. Well, I just wanted to say I find Buerk disgusting for his prejudice against fat people.

Oh you're right, that thought crossed my mind! Why stop with overweight people? Maybe we should stop saving people who have had car accidents, on the off-chance they might later go on to draw a pension and cost the government money...

And what about smokers! And drug addicts? The list could go on and on.

I agree, my list was too short. There are lots of other groups who can be discriminated against.

Oh no, that's a step too far. We don't want to discriminate against people with an actual illness (aka addiction)!

Isn't addiction to food a thing? Not that I'm suggesting that all over-weight people are over-weight (I hate that word 'obese'!) are addicted to food, but I don't see why that shouldn't exist. Once you stop simplifying, the possibilities are endless.

Well you or I recognise that we can have food related addictions, where he seems to think that those moments are simply signs of a weak will.

I think when you start getting so extreme in hating overweight people though, it's a sign you probably have a bad relationship with food yourself (on the orthorexia spectrum)...

Good point!

Scary. This is a fascist mentality. If they are weak Mr Buerk - then why are you picking on them? Do you sense they might not be able to fight back?

Aptly named. The ‘u’ makes no difference - if the cap fits... what a tw*t.
