Would you believe it?

Today I'm in hospital for a gynea procedure. They are going over my medical records etc as I have to be sedated. Comes to medication and because my thyroid problem was finally diagnosed privately NHS Scotland will not accept I have a thyroid problem and as far as they are concerned I'm naughty for self medicating!

That sounds mad... unless the authorities are just attempting to protect themselves from any future litigation for ‘potential injury’ to you caused by the ‘self administered medication’? ?

That’s definitely part of it m7-cola but the other part is definitely patronising the patient. The whole ‘what makes you think you know best?’ It happens in loads of professions and trades it’s just infuriating! I don’t understand this whole culture of sneering and belittling 😔

To anyone who asks you about your self medication (dr, nurse, consulatant) ask them if this is their area of expertise? When they say no tell them you’re not surprised as you couldn’t find anyone in the NHS who was an expert so you became one yourself! 😂

Good luck with your Op 🤗

Another alternative is :

"When they say no tell them you’re not surprised as you couldn’t find anyone in the NHS who was an expert so you had to find one in the private sector."

Good but still not quite my point. Most of us have had to google and trawl the web and get a lot of our information and guidance from lay people who are not medically trained at all eg this forum.

Yes, I realise my suggestion wasn't saying the same thing that you did. But I was trying to come up with something just a little less confrontational. :D

😂 I think we ALL need to be more confrontational and start a revolution! 🤗

Hi Paula,

I LOVE your energy! Your posts are always so enjoyable and informative to read. A thyroid revolution is probably what’s needed at his point based on what I have read on this forum.

I would say though, that when some people are very ill with thyroid disease, confrontation can be upsetting and trigger unwelcome symptoms. Before my TT when my Graves was really in full swing, any confrontation would send me into severe palpitations and trigger a terrible panic attack. I would actually become dizzy, see stars and want to faint. It would take me hours to calm down, and then I would be exhausted for several days.

So, for those who are able to confront, it’s fine if it works for you and do what you feel is right. For others, it may be too disruptive for their well being.

Just my two cents for what they are worth. Have a great evening across the pond! All the best 🤗

Us Irish are plain speakers, to hold back would give us a panic attack 😂 It is my BEST quality and my WORST quality 😂 But thank you 🤗 I completely understand that confrontation is really not a comfortable place for many (my husband included but we balance each other out 🥰)

Paula, you are a star! I appreciate plain speak myself and before my Graves and in my younger days, I had no hesitation about speaking my mind . As my aunt once told me at the age of 16, “you have a mouth and are not afraid to use it” 😂😂 I come from a Greek-Italian family where confrontation was a daily occurrence.

Now I have relegated the confrontation to others and watch the fireworks from a distance! I still get my point across in a way that works for me - nowadays it’s quieter and more measured, but I still say what I have to.

My husband is the quiet one like yours - and we still balance each other out - sounds like we both have good matches 🥰!

Bottle your energy and wonderful humour up for the rest of us! And maybe you will lead the revolution 👏👏

Be well and 🤗🤗

🤗 yeah don’t get me wrong I’m so mellow now, my Hypo days made me crazy! And being adequately medicated gives me a confidence to be calm. Like my NHS endo saying T3 is dangerous and she won’t prescribe it. I was very calm and smiley. Particularly when she asked if I would come back and see her (I have it prescribed privately) and I said sure I will, you need to see how well I’m doing. Before I would have told her where to shove her appointment and cut of my nose to spite my face.

Confrontation doesn’t have to be loud and abrasive, it’s just an ‘open conflict of opposing ideas’ 😬

I agree 100%! Now that my thyroid is out, I have become much calmer and more quiet than I used to be - so I guess I am doing the same as you - saying what I need to but in a calm way. I think we are on the same wavelength! All the best! 🤗
