I am awaiting diagnosis as my results are borderline but dry crusted up eyes have been something I've experienced a lot. Also when I rub my eyes - my eyeballs ache.

Think many of us do. Dry gritty eyes. Sore, red, swollen.... Not surprising when Endocine and Exocrine connected. Yet exocrine does not seem to be considered? Eye problems seem to go hand in hand. I read somewhere that 10% of TED caused by HypO. I was always told my problems not TED as was HypO not HypER. Mine stared back in 81/2 - as conjunctivitis, apparently, that would not heal. Ended up with ulcer in left eye. Reoccured many time throughout the last 40 years. When ulcer develops, always in left eye, always different area on eye.

Last eye issue, early 2017, real problems with what seemed flare up, which had me back at eye casualty several times over 2-3 months, in which time my prescription for glasses went from just needing my usual mild reading glasses to verifocals, My eyes would not settle. Was referred back to clinic, as nothing settling. (it has been a few years since at this clinic, however was at one in Leeds in early 2016) Consultant refused the referral and did not give a reason. I have been unable to get anyone to tell me why. I've suspected because 'thyroid' mentioned.

Yes, I’ve been getting really dry eyes for about 8 months now.

Been told it’s not thyroid related and it’s just dry eyes 👀

I only really bothers me when driving but now can drive more then few miles 🙁

I use preservative free eye drops- there are loads of them and I don’t have any preferences and if my eyes are really bad I use Artelac at night because it is thicker.

You need to use them a lot throughout the day once or twice will not be enough.

I and a lot of people I know seem to be being badly affected by pollen etc this year - doesn’t cause but it certainly doesn’t help my thyroid eyes - I don’t have TED but I’ve got loads of dry eye symptoms sore, blurred vision when they get really dry, itchy, hot etc, etc.

A hot facecloth held over closed eyes is really pleasant as is my eye bag - you put it in the microwave for a few seconds then lie down with it over your eyes. But loads of preservative free drops put in throughout the day, every day and don’t stop when your eyes feel better - they only feel better because and for as long as you are using the eye drops.

Just make sure whatever lotions, potions, or drops you may use are preservative free.

If your eye or forehead aches, it's likely seasonally allergies. If eyes are irritated and dry, then could be several causes, but I would first recommend you drink a pint of water (with a couple shakes of salt) before breakfast, and continue to drink this type of water throughout the day. If you're finding yourself peeing too much, then you're likely drinking too much. If your pee is dark yellow, then likely you're not drinking enough.

In addition to this, I've had great success with individual droppers of pure, unpreserved water as needed. I keep them in the refrigerator, and its a great treat to feel that cool, clean water on your eye.

There is a form of autoimmunities that tends to severe dry eye and lack of sufficient saliva.

I can't remember the name, but it's pretty common, and treatable.

I'm not a medical professional, check my advice out with a professional.

ps Virtually 100% of us don't drink enough water. Those that do fail to include salt and the trace minerals, so they just end up peeing all day. Good Luck.
