14 year old allergies

My 14 year old daughter has been struggling for weeks with an allergic type rhinitis, cough and itchy eyes. She is a known asthmatic with hay fever & allergies to cats, horses, dust etc etc. She has had a couple of mild reactions to foods and we are awaiting allergy testing at the hospital in the next couple of weeks. All the drugs, nasal spray & eye drops help a bit but she is struggling to the point that she is ending up having a day or so of every other week.

My question is could this be thyroid related? Every female on both my maternal & paternal side has had hypothyroid or know autoimmune thyroid disease. There are other autoimmune disease in the family too. I don’t know if it is something they will routinely test for during allergy testing & I want to ensure I am fully clued up! Any help gratefully received as it is really impacting on her life, she’s shattered from coughing at night, can’t sing and is in various choirs & is missing work that is crucial.

Thanks

Dear LowB12,

I am attaching a link here to an article that may give you some information about the link between allergies and thyroid conditions. I would see what the allergy tests show first - but it wouldn’t hurt to get the thyroid tests run - TSH, T3 and T4 as well as confirmation tests for hypo or hyper thyroid antibodies.

You may need to do these privately as I understand that in the UK GPs do not get these tests. I think the one that members here mention is Medichecks.

I myself have Graves and just had a TT 5 weeks ago. I suffered with the same illnesses as your daughter but mine started as a child and got better after the age of 12. I received desensitization shots and they helped enormously. However, they worsened again recently just before my thyroid surgery. One thing I discovered - my allergies improved after my surgery because my Graves had so dried out my skin and internal tissue that my nose membranes had dried out and was causing me to produce an allergic reaction. It was a surprise to me.

I wish you and your daughter well and hope she feels better - if it is allergy, hopefully the allergist will have some answers for you. If not, it will be worth checking out. Here is the link:

Sending positive thoughts and good wishes.

Given a similar profile in me and my husband's families we always wondered what was going on with everyone. Short answer, the thyroid is not responsible for the allergies, but there are root causes to both allergy and autoimmune illness.

Seeing as your daughter has a lot of allergic symptoms she may lack the enzyme (DAO) that breaks down histamine. It is called 'histamine intolerance'. Unfortunately long term use of steroids and antihistamines doesn't cure it at all. The best thing (once diagnosed) is histamine avoidance - so don't eat cold cooked meats, smoked meats, raw strawberries and tomatoes are high in histamine; whereas taking quercetin, bromelain, turmeric, nettle, co enzyme q10 can block histamine... I would also avoid cow dairy for a trial period (for the lactose and casein) as it seems to set off a lot of asthma / eczema in myself and others I know, but do this under the supervision of your GP to time it correctly around allergy tests.

Also, make sure her intake of Magnesium is good as a body that is in an inflammatory state and having spasms with asthma is likely to be Magnesium deficient.

Thank you for the information.

Will look at cutting out cow dairy, as we have almond milk in the house for me anyway. Also look at increasing foods that block histamine and magnesium.
