Acid reflux and how I cured myself!

I was looking at an old post on the subject on this site and thought this may be useful as every second person I meet says they are on some sort of Medication, prescribed or not. The number of ads for indigestion and acid reflux products is staggering and it is as if we are supposed to accept this as part of the human condition.

I took anatacids like Settlers and health salts from very young but after 50 developed bad acid reflux and was put on Omeprazole. When I had a problem with swallowing I had cameras down my gullet and was expected to increase dosage by 4 x which I refused but I upped it a bit and then developed kidney stones.

Thing is I knew in my heart of hearts the problem lay with me and my diet (which is full of vegetables and whole meal stuff so not bad). - pure and simple - rather than finding something to relieve the symptoms. Now I hardly take Omeprazole - maybe one in 2 months - they are reserved for odd occasions when I may be going out to eat and not sure what will be available or if I have a tiny indulgence.

I haven’t cut out much but have found two breads that suit - a corn bread and a posh quinoa sourdough but rarely have more than a couple of small slices in a day. (Slice and freeze means no waste) If I do have bread I won’t have any other wheat based meals that day. There are so many alternatives out there like brown rice or maize pastas, quinoa, polenta and the good old potato. Pastry, cake, biscuits anything with refined flours and sugars and cream and wines are the biggest no-nos for me and it really is quite easy to cut out or cut down.

I now have smaller meals but may eat more times in a day - better than feeling bloated.

Too often people wrongly think they have to cut out things they consider acid - oranges, tomatoes etc rather than the things your stomach needs to increase acid to cope with, like cake or pastry. Our stomachs balance out the acid content naturally to try and cope with our diets.

Strangely when I suggested to the specialist I wanted to tackle things through diet you’d think I’d suggested some unnatural practices!! Heaven forfend that I should make him redundant.

As for the swallowing thing well the remedy was simple - stop being a gannet and take smaller mouthfuls, smaller portions all round and eating more slowly ...putting fork down between mouthfuls is a good one. Try not to have a big bmeal at the end of the day. Drinking plenty water and slow measured breathing help too.

I like not being dependent on drugs and sleeping without pillows to prop me up. Plus losing a few though not enough ponds. If this helps anyone out there my job is done!

The GPs never think that it could be low acid causing the reflux, so all the medication just makes it worse. I take a spoonful of apple cider vinegar (in water!) when mine starts up and that cures it instantly.

I am glad you have found something that works for you.
