Scientific Basis For Going Gluten Free

Can anyone point me in the direction of published scientific papers proving that going gluten free reduces Hashimoto antibodies?

Anecdotal evidence convinces me,,but so far I have only read about GF from functional medical practitioners with a media presence, not researchers.

One paper that suggests a connection:

Exp Clin Endocrinol Diabetes. 2018 Jul 30. doi: 10.1055/a-0653-7108. [Epub ahead of print]

The Effect of Gluten-Free Diet on Thyroid Autoimmunity in Drug-Naïve Women with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis: A Pilot Study.

By my post I didn't mean that everyone is gluten sensitive but that if you are, then gluten and Hashimoto's together can affect your intestines badly and lead to leakage and coeliac disease. As ever, the effects of any particular substance are unique to the individual and can't be generalised.

I totally agree with you Diogenes . I must say that there are little tell tale signs when one tunes in what their body is communicating .In my personal experience after eating gluten it took about 20-30 minutes to feel some fast pulse and lethargy and needed to sleep it off like a drunk . This was before I was aware of any thyroid issues . I'm not sure if there was any connection to my gluten intolerance and needing to have TT . Today I'm off all gluten dairy sugar coffee soy products . It's made a Huge Difference for me .

Many thanks for your replies diogenes.I am aware I have issues with dairy.I am aware I have issues with FODMAP foods(eg onions, lentils)but I am not aware of any physical reaction to gluten. The BH genetic test ruled out gluten sensitivity & so did a coeliac test.

I read Prof David Sanders book"Gluten Attack"but saw no reference to sensitivity to gluten in Hashimotos raising antibodies.

I am not convinced there is a silent sensitivity to gluten in Hashimotos which raises antibodies & causes symptoms of Hashimotos to increase, but not recognisable gut symptoms.

I believe the best person to have researched that question might be Izabella Wentz so may be worth looking at her books or website.

In practice gluten is a problem for a lot of Hashi sufferers but it doesn't mean it is for everyone. On the other hand my coeliac friend had a lot of health issues before being finally diagnosed, the gut problems being among the last ones to emerge ... As usual we are all different.
