Hyperthyroid crisis relief

Hi everyone, it has been a while since i made a post but feel that i should update my sons condition which i was very worried about.

My son came to me late one evening in severe hyperthyroid crisis. He was severely malnourished, under medicated and looked close to death.

I took him to A and E where he suffered an acute bout of social anxiety and refused to stay.

I got him home and managed to get some emergency meds via the Gp and local pharmacy.

He has taken his medication now for about four weeks constant and i can already see improvements.

He has gained some weight, although a lot more is needed for him to be on track but im feeling relieved so far. His out -look on life has changed and he has hope now.

At present i am organising his repeats as he is still unable to organise this aspect of his well-being but i hope he will be able to establish this for himself in the future.

His brain does not function like it used too and he does not seem to make the link between his ill health and the fact that he has not eaten or taken regular medications for his condition, i hope this is changeable.

He is currently taking 10 mg carbimazole and various quantities of propanalol. I find that when he has stayed in his need for propanalol reduces dramatically, but if he goes out he needs more which i think is related to social stresses and not thyroid disease.

Glad to hear he is doing better. Have they said what is causing the hyperactive thyroid ?

Many of us with Graves' (and possibly those with other causes of hyperthyroidism) find that stress makes us feel worse, so there might be a link between 'social stress' and the disease. However, attempting to force a young man to stay at home would probably be equally stressful !

The propranolol will help with symptoms such as rapid heart rate, palpitations, tremor, and some breathing difficulties, but that won't help reduce thyroid levels - that's the job of the carbimazole. Carbimazole impedes production of new hormone, but it can't destroy exisiting stores, so it can take a few weeks for levels to come within range.

10mg of carbimazole is a pretty moderate dose. Is he under the care of an endo yet, and is he having regular blood tests ? (usually every 4-6 weeks at an early stage).

If you have any more questions, just post !

This may help:

Because of the terrible nature the disease has had on both his mental health and organisation skills he hasn't had the mental capacity to remember appointments either at the hospital or doctors. He needs support for this, support which im happy to give until he is stable. He had his last bloods done on the 8th sept which is the date he turned up at my door very ill and which i took him immediately to A and E. and today we have just been informed that his thyroid levels were over 100. I dont know how much or how often he was taking his medication prior to the 8th but im guessing not too often. He has communication limitations are finds it impossible to order repeat prescriptions and has no phone and im guessing did not like to put burden on the group he was previously associating with to use their phones. Since the 8th he has taken his medication regularly as i have been given consent to act on his behalf. Since doing so i have never been able to pick up his prescription on the date which it is due and the reception staff at the GPs have always got a reason for this but if left in his hands would cause too much stress and hence he would go without receiving his meds.

Ive been reading about malnutrition and the effects which it has on both the circulatory system, heart muscle and the lungs which i think may well be contributing to his tachycardia and breathlessness and im trying to keep on top of this issue.

We have an emergency appointment today after he has finished work, the GP will not give him his prescription until he sees him and checks his obs so fingers crossed he has energy as they did not for fill his repeat from last week so again has no no carbimazole for today and if i can not get him down there will have none tomorrow either. They will only give him a week supply of carbimazole at a time which has caused a lot of faffing around but the doc insure me he will give him a months supply if he turns up today
