Thyroid and low GFR

I was treated for hyperthyroidism in 2004 with iodine.

I am now hypothyroid.

I am also CKD 3.

My Endo recently changed my meds and my recent labs indicate that my level was at 8.6. Way too high which really means way too low.

My meds have been since changed.

My question relates to Thyroid and GFR level.

My GFR is typically in the high 50’s but it was considerably lower.

I believe it has everything to do with my thyroid.

Has anyone else had this to happen?

Thyroid definitely affects kidney function. If your GFR has fallen and your creatinine has risen, it's a sign your thyroid dose is too low. I have the opposite problem. My creatinine drops below the reference range when my dose is too high, and a downward adjustment to my dose brings it back into range. This post talks about thyroid's effect on kidney function: tiredthyroid.com/blog/2014/...

Thank you so much.

My creatine stayed the same but I was convinced that it was my thyroid that threw it off.

Thanks again this is very good information.

Hi HIFL, that’s very interesting, I’ve not been diagnosed with a thyroid condition but suspect that my thyroid is struggling (my TSH is just under 3 and I have the symptoms and struggle with absorption issues). I also have CKD level 3 which has been diagnosed. My doctors are absolutely adamant I don’t have thyroid problems and that thyroid and kidneys are not connected at all. I’ve always suspected that that’s not correct.

Well I hope you can get further testing. As you know TSH can be misleading.

Yes, I am scheduled for a follow up with my Endocrinologist and my PCP. In a few weeks.

Thanks for the information.
