Hi yarndoodle. Oh yes, the begging of IC was terrible! I was diagnosed with IC over 20 years ago. My cycoscpy last year showed no irritation, whereas my cycoscopy 20 years ago showed Hunner’s ulcers. I achieved this thru diet alone. I never took any oral medication. In the beginning I had laparoscopic exploratory surgery, cycoscopy, and bladder hydro distention treatment all at the same time. It helped for many years. I later had a few in-office procedures. They made me worse. That’s when I gave up on that and focused solely on an IC diet. I found that garlic and onions gave me some of my worse symptoms, so I cut those out. Carbonation also caused me problems. I still don’t eat garlic or onions, drink carbonated like twice a year, but I eat almost every other type of food now. I don’t eat a lot of salt, but I’ve noticed too much can give me symptoms. I drink lots of water, coffee (which according to the IC diet you should avoid), and rarely anything else. My IC was under control thru diet for about 4 years. However......
Then I found out I have Hashi’s. I went 100% gluten free and have been gluten free for many years ever since. I am also soy and 90% dairy free. My entire body felt better giving up gluten. Gluten, soy and dairy all cause inflammation. I now have to wonder if gluten, soy and dairy caused my bladder inflammation, and if removing those foods from my diet helped are cure it?
One other thing is female hormones. Hormones drop during our cycles and as we age. During some months I suddenly have ureathral pain and some bladder irritation. My urologist said that as women age, bladder problems and bladder infections increase due to reduction of hormones. She suggested topical hormone cream. When I’ve had such pains, I’ve applied hormone cream and it took away the pain.
Aside from the IC diet, I think I might have read something about about an alkaline diet helping, too. The two have rather opposite principles.
I hope your IC continues to get better and your thyroid disease, too.
