I have too much stomach acidity. I take an omeprazole capsule a couple of hours before bedtime and always keep antiacid tablets from Asda in my bag for occasional daytime use. The recommendation is to take the omeprazole in the morning, but I find the acid builds up in my stomach overnight while I'm not moving about, so taking it at bedtime makes more sense.

Are you sure you have too much stomach acid? That's rather rare in hypos. The symptoms are the same for both high and low stomach acid, so it would be a good idea to check if you haven't already done so. :)

That's interesting.

Agreed. I used to take antacids thinking I had too much stomach acid but it turns out to be the opposite - very low. Obviously I quit the antacids!

It is a problem, when the symptoms are the same. And, doctors never think to check!

Hi, yes I did have but changed my diet to gluten free and have been good since. If you are underactive/ hashimotoes then low acid can be the problem which will produce same symptoms as to much acid. Diet change is recommended rather than take omeprozole which can bring a whole new set of problems down the line.

Hi thanks for your reply , do you also avoid acidic foods etc ? Thanks

No I don’t. I drink a glass of water with lemon juice and pink Himalayan salt every day and feel fine with it. I will say that before going gf I was constantly sucking antacid. It will take a few months but you will see a benefit . Good luck 😄👍

I do this too. Out of interest how much pink salt do you take? I have 1/4tsp morning and another 1/4 lunch time but wonder if I could have more.

Just the 1/4teaspoon in the mornings

I’d recommend to drink lemon with 4 strands of saffron in a glass of warm water on an empty stomach in the morning 10 minutes before breakfast to activate digestion. I don’t add Himalayan salt as I have it plenty enough in my diet. But there are known benefits of saffron, turmeric and ginger when it comes to gastric health. But always check first with your naturopath. According to a 2007 study, acid reflux and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) may be caused by inflammation and oxidative stress. The study suggests GERD should be treated with antioxidants and anti-inflammatories.

I chew raw dried ginger to help with it but thanks for the saffron tip!

I agree with DeeD123. Omeprazole should be a short term fix only.

I bought a good quality water filter and ensure I drink at least 2 litres a day and usually more. Just keep a bottle of water in front of you and take regular sips.

As well as other health benefits I fortunately haven't had silent reflux for over 4 years now.

I hope it works for you too!

I eat healthily but not gluton free. Basically no great change other than drinking well filtered water regularly.

Sharon, do you think you must give up acidic foods? Is that why you keep asking about the diet? Adding HCL Betaine or apple cider vinegar with meals can help. You could try DGL which is licorice or drink ThroatCoat tea. Also Slippery Elm might be soothing and protective in the meantime.

I have it. It’s not just the acid in your throat etc, it’s the non acid (pepsin). Going GF helps a lot. I also drink a bottle of alkaline water each day. You can buy them (over 8.8 ph I think). I buy alkaline drops to put into the water too. Gargle with it.

I can’t remember the ph but the alkaline denatures the pepsin in the throat. It’s not a miracle cure but it helps. I don’t drink tea, coffee, fizzy drinks etc. I also stay away from highly acidic foods.

I try really hard to not take the PPI’s. Awful things!

Hope you feel some benefit from the above. It’s not a nice thing to have.

Hi, thanks for your reply ,where do you get alkaline drops .? Never heard of them , I’m in the UK .

Your diet must be very restricted no gluten ,no acidic foods ,do you mind me asking? What kind of foods do you eat ? Thanks again

Really boring foods! Lol. It’s mainly veggies, pulses, lots of fish, some white meat. I do have low acidic foods but just not highly acidic. I find eating really small meals helps with my reflux too.

I buy my drops from Amazon. Alkalife I think they are called. I feel for you, it’s an awful thing to have.

I suggest you search the site for posts on low stomach acid .Being hypothyroid and ageing leads to lower acid.My GP diagnosed high acid and put me on a ppi which I have just finished. It helped but not completely.Tested for low stomach acid this am and I think that could well be the problem .Look up The Thyroid Pharmacist Isabella Wentz

Hi Sandra49, I also used to suffer a lot from acid reflux and I've found that a spoonful of apple cider vinegar in a full glass of warm water really helps. I drink it each morning on an empty stomach about 30 mins before breakfast. Holland and Barrett do a great range, I get the Braggs honey/vinegar mix, and you don't need to spend a fortune. Also, try a good probiotic, avoid the yoghurt drinks as they're full of sugar, I take 2 capsules a day of BioKult and I am now very rarely bothered with reflux.

Hope this helps.

Hi Bex48 I am a bit confused. Isn’t apple cider vinegar suppose to be a killer for reflux?

Bex48 profile image
Bex48 in reply toSamaritana

Hi Samaritans

You would think so wouldn't you, but it really does work. I'm not quite sure of the science behind it but try researching it on the internet. Freshly squeezed lemon juice in water works just as well too.

As Treepie says, getting older reduces your stomach acid, as does being hypo, having low B12 and low salt diets.

Have a read on this site, and try the acid test at the bottom of this article :

I've bought the t-shirt for reflux, been prescribed PPIs etc... it was low stomach acid all along due to poor t4-t3 conversion which itself was due to high antibodies and low mineral absorption (selenium, iron, zinc and magnesium).

I would definitely review your t3 intake as your previous post suggests you're not on a high enough dose.

I would also check antibody levels as if they're high, only a fraction of hormone is going to make it to your cells.

The 'cure' for high antibodies, is, for many, going gluten free. In the meantime I recommend Betaine HCl with all protein containing meals as per greygoose link (above). I also back up the comments that suggest vit C (lemon) and a pinch of mineral salt on an empty stomach in the morning may help give your stomach a boost.

I have non-silent acid reflux, at one time it was very bad. I now strictly have a teaspoon or so of apple cider vinegar in water before every meal, and a digestive enzyme tablet with my evening meal. The enzyme tablets make a big difference, but are a bit pricey to have with every meal.

As long as I stick strictly to this it's not too bad. I now get the occasional twinge when it used to be every day.

Edit: oops, just seen this is an old post. No idea how I got here!
