I had terrible stomach cramps (like IBS) onTeva. I don’t suffer from IBS! Many people just don’t get on with Teva. I would go back to your GP and ask for another brand. Also report it under the Yellow Card system. I take Mercury Pharma and i’m fine on that brand. didn’t get on with Wockhardt either. Extreme itching! Had extreme itching on a antihistamine tablet which i’d taken for horsefly bites and realised they were also made by Wockhardt! There’s something in the fillers that disagree with me. Hope you can sort this out.

Hi Rita-d ,

Thank you for your reply and hope you are feeling better now . Yes think I will have to ask to change them as they certainly don’t make you feel good very nauseous too . Thank you .:-)

Just realised it was Levothyroxine that I was unwell on, not liothyronine but I think probably the same applies that it’s the fillers that are disagreeing with you. The only way to know is to switch brands. Hope you’re successful in resolving this issue. Good luck. xxx

Yes i had terrible leg and hip pain .felt sick, Sweating,Palpatations and itching I saw my Doctor and he agreed it was Teva brand and now put it on my repeat prescriptions Actavis brand only also I reported it on Yellow Card System .

I take NDT so never taken TEVA but I have seen a post saying T3 TEVA fine so may be do a search on here and see what they say. I know there have been problems with T4 TEVA so also make sure advice is given on T3 and not the T4. The fillers may well be different to those you are more used to so any doubt ask your doctor to specify Morningside for that reason.

Hi Silverfox7 , hope you are feeling better now . Yes I’m definetly going to have to change them as side effects are no better at all . I saw my chiropractor yest so I’m exhausted from that so sometimes it’s comfusing as to what causes the fatigue though I have felt worse for certain since being on this brand .

Thank you for all your advice I appreciate it so much - everyone’s so kind .

Think Teva brand has had problems. Believe their licence previously withdrawn due to poor quality product. Once reformulated licence reissued. I am no expert on this site but seem to remember it was Mannitol in Teva that caused problems? An experienced person on here could advise you about this? I did not feel right on Teva - though no specific reason.

helvella profile image
helvellaAdministrator in reply toMarmie

The problem from around 2013 appears to have been the dextrin - where they substituted a different form of dextrin which affected availability of levothyroxine to be absorbed.

The current problem is suspected to be due to the mannitol which was used instead of the more commonly used lactose.

Hi Marmie ,

Thank you so much for your reply . I definetly don’t feel right on them I’m not sure if they are too strong or too weak or just disagree with me .

Hope you are well yourself :-)

Thank you .

Angela if you've found a brand that doesn't suit you don't ever take it again.

I take Mercury and it's fine. I don't touch anything from Wockhardt!!!

Thankfully my pharmacy notes my preferences.

IM on the teva medication. And have the same thing wrong with me. I can’t stop the medication, without get to see a doctor first. I’m on a 175mg a daily and without a Tyriod. How can people stop take it if they are independent on the tablet?

LAHs profile image
LAHs in reply toHaze1975

Haze, I am in the US but I am sure you have some sort of equivalent in the UK. Something like that happened to me once, if you are taking a medication which is making you sick you do not make appointments you go to an emergency room and tell them you want a different medication immediately (a different brand in the case of thyroid meds). They telephone your doc to get a suggestion for an alternative then they give you a temporary prescription to see you through until you get your doc's appointment. I have no thyroid too and when my ignorant Endo put me on the wrong dose of the wrong meds I had to do something similar to this, I demanded a different doctor immediately as well since the Endo I had was killing me!

That’s true. I’d have to talk to someone.

You could go to your pharmacist and ask if they would kindly exchange your remaining Teva for some other make.

Hi soprano, it's really horrible how these brands can make us feel. We certainly know our own bodies.

Yes I'm feeling much better thanks. I've just gone down in dose and thankful I'm not sweating now.

I felt heady, not exactly a headache, tingly skin and putting on weight, tiredness too, felt as though it is weaker in strength, had been on Mercury for 10 years with no side effects, now taken teva for about 3 months, have reported this to teva, gradually now getting more used to it, unfortunately it is the only t3 my pharmacist can get hold of, but he is on the case!!

I have been on a strict diet and shifted half a stone, and now being very careful not to put it back on again, and maybe I am getting used to the new symptoms!

I was given Teva thyroxine again about 2 weeks ago as had no choice - ran out of my normal brand. I suspect it was causing me to feel way under par. I had a similar effect a while back and had requested pharmacy not to dispense it but they ignored it last time. I believe it wasn’t strong enough. I definitely feel more anxious, tired and have brain fog. I want to come off it again ASAP.

I can't take Teva as I'm sensitive to Mannitol linked to my fructose malabsorption.

My pharmacist gave me Teva t3 it was awful and I’m sure I had a bad reaction to fillers. I take mine sublingualy so straight to blood stream and Teva did not dissolve just got bigger like cotton wool. Complained to Drs and pharmacy and now they order me Mercury ( the one I had previously) however they said mercury are stopping production 😱

I now flatly refuse to take anything made by Teva! Always of inferior quality, weaker than other brands, fillers cause itching and shortness of breath, body pains. T3 and T4 are both shocking for me. I have yellow carded both. Thankfully my GP has now written specified brands in my repeat prescription.

Hi Magenta 41 ,

Yes, thank you. I have been good this summer with all the sunshine which makes me think my replacement D3 dosage is insufficient for the remainder of the year! My T3 and T4 are specified brands and seem to be working well for me now.

I hope you have been able to change to a brand that suits you now. For me that is Mercury Pharma for T3 in combination with Wockhardt T4. I seem unable to tolerate any other combination. Everyone is different though and what suits one doesn't always suit another!

Soprano67 profile image
Soprano67 in reply toMagenta41

Hi Magenta 41 ,

That’s brilliant that both your brands are working . I still take the vitamin d3 spray plus k2 and prob will get mine tested in October .

I decided to not take t3 today to see if any difference but felt so tired so took them earlier and shaky again and cramps so don’t think they agree with me . 😀

I had severe anxiety. I didn’t know why I was having it, but then googled teva brand and understood why I was having it. Went to GP, she said I was not the only one to report side effects. So I came off it and have had no anxiety since then. Please don’t just suffer go and get it changed, and do use the yellow card to register concerns. We have enough challenges without having to put up with rubbish. Good luck

There seems to be a lot of confusion in replies to your original question that asked specifically about Teva Liothyronine -T3.

A lot of replies concern Teva Levothyroxine (T4).

We hear a lot about adverse reactions to Teva Levothyroxine. Teva Liothyrone isn't mentioned very often at all.

Has your brand changed from something else to Teva? If so then do a yellow card report and ask to go back to your original brand if you felt fine on that.

Yes Seaside Susie , I used to get liothyronine in a grey box no name on it and it seemed fine and then they changed it to morning star which I thought was weak and now this Teva I feel headachy shaky n nausea and cramps . Yest I was at hairdressers and my head spun and later same on the computer. I just hope they will change them as I had to go private to get T3 and not back until October as it’s so expensive .

Hope your feeling good :-)

Thanks

So was given Teva Liothyronine earlier this year. Apparently it's cheaper. I had lots of side effects- constipation, fatigue, sudden and substantial weight gain, felt cold-a really unusual thing for me. Also lost the outer third of my eyebrows. Generally felt lousy. Weirdly my routine blood results were normal even though I felt anything but!

My pharmacist was wonderful and yellow carded the event. Also put me straight back on my previous brand.

I don't know why this happened but it has really set me back this year. My advice go straight to your pharmacy and tell them.

Good luck 😉

SeasideSusie profile image
SeasideSusieRemembering in reply toBolton70

The cost to the NHS of Teva Liothyronine is listed as the same as all the other brands - £244.72 for 28 x 20mcg tablets

bnf.nice.org.uk/medicinal-f...

I've no idea why Teva is being prescribed since it causes all these problems, cost doesn't come into it with thyroid meds by the look of it.

I use an inhaler which was recently changed from normal brand to one produced by Teva, many people have had problems/side effects with the new Teva one too. I think the Teva inhaler is cheaper than the other brand though.

I'm beginning to think that Teva medications are substandard going by the problems experienced.

I was given Teva T3 a couple of months ago instead of Morningside, which coincided with a flare up of Achilles tendonitis and plantar fasciitis in both legs & feet. Now I am not 100% sure that it was purely down to the Teva or if I just needed to tweak my dose up again (been reducing my T4), but back on Morningside with a slight increase and things are getting better.

Just been given Teva again today, so guess I get to see what happens this time in a week or so's time again.

Hi I am on levothyroxine 75mg daily and got changed to Tevo brand in January this year. In April I found that I was getting pain around my hand and arm from my thumb joint up to the wrist and then right up my arm, I thought I was developing something like Carpel tunnel syndrome or tendonitis and it got really bad. I eventually wondered if it might be the medication as it had changed brand and so I asked my pharmacist to give me an alternative manufacturer. He said I wasn't the only person to have complained about side effects with Tevo but wouldn't be more specific as to what symptoms they had reported. I changed to Mercury brand 3 months ago and the pain disappeared immediately and has not returned.

It now makes me wonder if Tevo was also responsible for the unpleasant anxiety symptoms I experienced earlier this year and also the intermittent itching on my trunk although I can't prove this but it seems likely as I now see others posting various symptoms. Hope this is helpful.

Oh dear, all of my drugs are Teva, I thought they were okay because most of them are lactose free and I’m lactose intolerant. Reading through the posts is making me wonder if I’m being adversely affected by the fillers 🤔

silverfox7 profile image
silverfox7 in reply toSupernovae

Can I just ask you something? Are you experiencing any problem with TEVA or are you worried that it might cause problems? A while back now I've read on a site, not sure which one, of something thinking it was good though she was lactose intolerant. As TEVA brand seems to tick that box I'm just wondering if it's only suitable for patients with Lactose intolerance but the pharmacists are giving them to everybody and anybody.

Hi Silverfox 7 ,

Yes it’s the teva brand of liothyronoine it’s making me nauseous shaky and headaches I’m only on it since Thursday. I’m wondering should I give it a bit longer . I also feel v warm then cold n feintish .

Hope you are feeling good yourself :-)

Thanks .

Supernovae profile image
Supernovae in reply tosilverfox7

Hi Silverfox

I do get very itchy, particularly in the evenings and from previous comments here have wondered if it was the Teva levo. Otherwise I haven’t noticed anything in particular but I had an increase in levo from 100mcg to 125mcg several months ago because I was so lethargic. I now think 125mcg is too much and this week I started taking 100mcg and 125mcg on alternate days. I hope this doesn’t indicate that the amount of levo in Teva brand is inconsistent!

silverfox7 profile image
silverfox7 in reply toSupernovae

Itching could be an allergy to fillers but to check if you take an anti histamine one hour before meds and that stops it then it is an allergy giving you the itching so in that case I would try another brand.

Any change of brand could cause a slight difference in potency. Tablets aren't made to an exact figure. I'm assuming it's difficult to do this. So if producing say a 100 mcg dose it can be made anywhere between 100 plus or minus 5% so your particular brand could be 105 mcg. It won't alter from that so no worries there and so as your dose is adjusted as close as possible to what you are best at then getting tested is always advisable if changing brands. Another brand looking at extremes could be 95 so some may feel the difference depending on there dose. This has been the norm since 2006 but before that it was plus/minus 10% so could be almost a dose size difference but my figures are made up aseasier to spot the maths. In real terms they MAY be closer but always to check levels for you 6 weeks after a change.

120/125 is fine to take as in any case Levo is inactive so it won't make a significant difference as you body chances what it need to convert to T3 which is the active hormone. Things can go wrong if you aren't converting properly but that's a different thing altogether.

Supernovae profile image
Supernovae in reply tosilverfox7

Thank you, I’ll give it a try, I’ve got some cetirizine. I wasn’t converting very well but I’ve made a number of changes and my T3 is vastly improved.

I’ll see how the 100mcg/125mcg alternately goes.

Many people seem to have problems with Teva brand so I would suggest that you ask for another brand or revert back to your original brand.

You could try taking an antihistamine one hour before. If then ok then it's the fillers that are a problem.
