hemithyroidectomy being suppressed can I take folic acid ?
I'd say check with your endocrinologists but they aren't likely to have a clue. Since you need folate for essential thyroid health I don't see how it would be a problem (better than folic acid)
In the case of cancer, I would check with a good oncologist. One of the most groundbreaking chemotherapy treatments was one that supressed folic acid uptake. As folic acid helps cells division and growth this also applies to cancer cells. Cancer cells starved of Folate will not grow.
If you are completely clear it can be beneficial to start again on restoring levels....but don't take my word for it. Do some research, ideally from proper medical journals... I believe that methylfolate is better absorbed and less likely to hang around in the body. Ben Lynch has written a lot on Folate.
Here's the most balanced commentary on the double-edged sword of folic acid that I could find... In the 1940's , shortly after its discovery, they went on to create anti-folate based chemo drugs. However, it does offer preventative protection to newborns from brain tumors and also appear to help people with colo-rectal cancer so it's a very, very complicated topic... and I need to re-read this a few times to even begin to understand.
