Has anyone cancelled a trip/Airbnb due to Hashimoto’s?

Over the last few days I had an incident where I was offloaded off three flights in two London airports over two days, with no compensation provided. The airline also lost my luggage :( which is still to be located.

As a result, I didn’t go on my trip and ended up with an AirBnb cancellation charge of £450. They inform me as because it was due to ill health, I should produce a doctors note to obtain a full refund.

Basically I had a very severe stress / Hashi’s attack and had to go home. Has this happened to anyone before and if so, what would it be useful to have my GP state in terms of not being fit for travel and the nature of Hashi’s?

Many thanks x

Were you offloaded because you were ill on the flight or for another reason? Because a "Hashi's attack" is technically not a medically recognised thing I doubt that you will be able to claim back the AirBnb unfortunately. They will probably just mark it down as a panic attack. Did you present to a Doctor straight after the incident? If you did you might be able to get something from the Doctor.

Airbnb are super reasonable especially if you are frequent customer. I have been booking weigh them for 5 years, every single trip pretty much and when I had a situation in Bali back in May they refunded me fully for a week stay due to my dissatisfaction. It was not medical but if you reason well I think you’re likely be successful.

Thank you Anna

Do you think it makes a difference if one didn’t check in?

Not sure, but if you’re a frequent user I’d definitely leverage that!

They are loosing customers as the prices have been increasing so it’s only about a uniqueness now. I myself recently paid less for a 4 star hotel room in New Zealand at a lake front than I would for a room in very average Airbnb in land.

I managed to get all my money back from Airbnb after producing a doctors note :)

Not an answer that you asked for but going forward, you can list hypothyroidism on your travel insurance. Costs a bit more but it covers your issue and you could have gotten it all back in one go. I also have a friend booked a £2k trip to Thailand and as she had pre warned them she had anxiety. They covered the whole trip. No doctors note was needed. She called two days before to forward them then on the day of the flight to confirm. Hope you get it sorted. And an FYI I always email and request a call back between a certain set of hours on a certain day. They seem to be more together as they’ve had time to read your details, etc as Airbnb are great most of the time.

I took out travel insurance for many, many years when going abroad for holidays, even to Australia and New Zealand. I always made sure hypothyroidism was listed, and when speaking to different insurers the fact that hypothyroidism was declared never made any difference to the price of the insurance. It was always the same as my husband's who had no medical conditions to declare.
