Hi my thyroid has now gone overactive twice. I take a regular medication which can cause thyroid problems so my doctor presumed it was that. However saw an endicronolist yesterday who thinks its more likely to be Graves disease (tho I dont have a goitre). Now bit worried! could anyone share a similar experience with me? And treatment etc. Thanks

To know if you have Graves disease, you need the right antibodies testing. Has your endo done that?

Thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulin (TSI)

If medication is suggested (eg Carbimazole), you should ensure TSI antibodies are tested to confirm Graves first.

Hi,

Mine went overactive twice. It was so bad i made the decision to have a total thyroidectomy. I did not choose to do this lightly i gave it great thought. But this was because i would have almost inevitably gone into thyroid storm. This may not happen to you so please dont worry. It may be the medication you are on as you say. I am sure the endo would have checked all of your antibodies. But am wondering if its possible to get a second oppinion?

I have graves disease and currently take Carbimazole. You need to definately know it Graves though. As per other post, you need to have the TSI and TrAb antibodies tested to confirm it. The Carbimazole is a rough ride (well for me it just now) but stats show around 60% of graves patients go into remission after taking it. I'm hoping I'll be in the 60%... as i'd like to keep my thyroid...the way i see it is technically there's nothing wrong with my thyroid, it's just doing what the antibodies are telling it to do. Not sure if it's helping or not but I've been gluten free for a few months now too.
