Debsoxford,

No, Carbimazole reduces T4 and T3 hormone levels. The reduction in thyroid hormone may be why antibodies have dropped. Antibodies fluctuate and will be high after an autoimmune attack on the thyroid gland and will then subside until the next attack.

Ok thank you clutter, as my results are all in range Dr said about coming off completely after next bloods in 6 weeks, but I'm not sure about coming off at such a dose although I am going to lower to 15mgs for next 6 weeks. Not surprisingly my 3T3 and 3T4 are at the low portion of the ranges but I'm assuming they will improve once I completely come off the carb?

Thank you for your extremely quick response and help

Best wishes

Debsoxford,

How long have you been taking Carbimazole? I think most doctors titrate dose down to 2.5mg daily in order to wean patients off for remission.

Roughly 13 months normal GP story started to low dose then doubled (40mg) now working back down from 20mg I had to suggest doing 15mg for the 6 weeks prior to bloods as I thought I should be lowering more slowly so not relapse?

Thank you x

Debsoxford,

GP should have referred you to endocrinology for management. I think GP should check thyroid levels on 15mg and if good reduce to 10mg or 5mg retest and reduce to 5mg alternate days rather than stop while you are still taking 15mg.

Agree with Clutter, dont let them stop dead on a high dose like 20mg!

If you are hyper or if you are hyper with antibodies (Graves Disease) you should not be being treated by your own GP. He / she should have referred you to an endocrinologist and all your treatment should be organised via him / her. Definitely don’t stop your carbimazole suddenly.

Make sure you always get and keep a copy of all your blood test results.

My thyroid antibodies didn’t start to reduce until I went on totally gluten free diet.

You really ought to have been seen at a hospital and by an endocrinologist who specialises in the thyroid rather than by someone who specialises in diabetic patients. Do you know why your doctor didn’t do that?

Thanks fruitandnutcase

I got a referral when sub clinical but the waiting list was 9 months long! I'm in process of moving to new area so didn't book it, GP not to bad (compared to some of the things I read on here) I research as much as I can also see a herbalist and of course ask the lovely people here the HCA at surgery knows I research and because GP forgets to put on system what I should be tested for I manage to get both T's and antibodies tested!

Yes thanks for the tip I always get a print off, I even have a spread sheet with my levels on it! Lol

Yes went GF when starting reading posts been hard but worth it

Best wishes

Gosh, how good t be able to tell them the tests you need. I never ever managed to have my T3 tested on the NHS. Had the antibodies done and B12 eventually but Vitamin D? Nope. The endo I asked said ‘vitamin D is very fashionable at the moment, if you can prove to me that there’s anything in it I’ll do it for you’. Believe it or not I was so lost for words I who am never stuck for words couldn’t say anything. Anyway, next time when I went prepared to prove it he had moved on so I sent off to City Assays and did it myself

Yes I know!! She says she's thick skinned when I did question if she'd get into trouble. I argued with my GP so after throwing his hands up in the air he agreed!

On the vitamin D I'd have referred him to NHS website which actually recommends some people supplement vitamin D

Best wishes
