20 years ago i had a lot of problems with my sinuses so much so that i attended the maxillofacial unit for an operation. They cut through my upper gum into my sinus cavity and removed something that had shown up on a scan! After the operation i asked what it was? I was told that they didnt know but it was some sort of fibrous material??
Could this have been part of my thyroid?

The hospital pathologist should have checked out the tissue and made a report on it which would have been passed onto the surgeon and then should have been reported to your GP. Presumably it was nothing sinister! Do you have access to your medical notes on line? You should be able to find out. Very remiss of them not to let you know, but then you are only a mere patient and why would you be interested in what it was! Excuse my sarcasm, tend to suffer from it a lot where NHS is concerned!
I hope you find out the nature of the fibrous material - but I just to talk about sinus and thyrois, for anyone else who identifies with sinus pain. Until I was treated (with NDT) I had suffered really bad sinus pain (and later dizziness) for years. Recently I reduced my medication (due to my misinterpretation of symptoms) to a point where I became quite hypothyroid again. And I began suffering my former sinus pain and dizziness. I read that hypothyroidism can cause changes in the fluid in the ears - and I think that explains my problem. My sinus and dizziness problems disappeared as soon as I got my levels up again. How I managed to so mismanage my dosage is a story in itself, however my doctor is incredibly patient and understanding and he helpmed me through this.
Ellie-Louise sorry I did not mean to upset anyone, I think it is very rare occurrence. It is just interesting that bits of thyroid tissue can get to the maxillary sinuses by this method of spread. I doubt the normal destruction in autoimmune thyroiditis could transport it to the sinuses. It never occurred to me that bits of thyroid tissue might exist in other locations due to early abnormal development of the tissues.
I had a lump removed from my forehead that was thought to be a cyst but on removal the doctor who did the operation said 'Thats not a cyst' and seem quite suprised by what she found. I did try to find out what was removed and get a copy of the lab report but all I could ever get out of anyone was that it was ' nothing to worry about' being the narsistic character I am I like to know all about myself and the bits of my body that are removed but I got the impression my GP was not given any information of interest.
Hidden you should have a right to know given it was from your body! Can you probe further given the freedom of information act? Seems hard to believe it was not recorded or reported upon.
my cousin told me shortly after my op that she had an operation on her leg (dont know whereabouts and cant ask her because we have lost touch) where they found a similar substance...she is hypo!!
makes you wonder where parts of the thyroid can end up??
