Thyroiditis86,

Central hypothyroidism may be indicated by low-normal TSH with T4 and T3 below range or bottom of range. Your thyroid levels are euthyroid and do not indicate central hypothyroidism.

Another user said otherwise? I'm confused. Apologies. But sometimes ranges/bloods can't be all we have to go on as these don't always show the full picture? All the physical (inside and out) medical symptoms are there. Unsure what to do next. Sure it's pituitary/central as periods stopped and hair has nearly all fallen out at 30.

Thyroiditis86,

Unfortunately, blood results and ranges are how NHS and most private doctors diagnose primary or central hypothyroidism. Symptoms may precede abnormal bloods by months/years but equally hypothyrois symptoms are non-specific and can be due to a number of conditions.

Your GP should investigate why your periods have stopped and why your hair has fallen out as your thyroid levels are euthyroid.

Aren't there more complex pituitary related tests to test for central hypothyroidism?

Thyroiditis86,

If central hypothyroidism is suspected a pituitary function blood test can be done.

You have

LOW TSH

LOW FREET4

LOW FREET3

All of which screams Central /secondary / pituarity or maybe Tertiary Hypothyroid

Its not your thyroid thats faulty its the pituarity or hypothalmus

Usually this is accompanied by

High cholesterol

Low ferritin

Low folate

Low vit b12

Low vit d3

Have you ever had massiveblood loss or sustained a head injury

Are others in your family Hypothyroid

If your physical appearance also screams hypothyroid can yo take photos of what your face was like before all this started

Take an assertive person who is able to read up and understand all the above then you should not be browbeaten. - This is a post in another thread. I appreciate everyone's time/opinions. Because I have Asperger's also I find it all very overwhelming. X

Thyroiditis86,

I don't agree with that member's interpretation. She forgets that people not taking medication do not have high in range FT4 and FT3.

Your TSH is normal, FT4 normal and FT3 is low-normal which does not indicate primary or central hypothyroidism.

If you had primary hypothyroidism TSH would be high (over range) and FT4 and FT3 would be in normal range or below range.

If you had central hypothyroidism TSH would be low-normal but FT4 and FT3 would be bottom of range or below range.

Your active B12 is high in range, folate low in range and vitD insufficient as I commented and advised in healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

Have you been supplementing vitD as I suggested? It will take 4-6 weeks to feel improvement and having good vitD levels also improves T4 to T3 conversion.

You didn't post a result for ferritin. If ferritin or iron haven't been tested do ask your GP to check particularly as your period has stopped and you are losing hair.

Hi, my daughter who has an under active thyroid had the same symptoms as well as low pelvic pain and when tested her vitamin d levels were deficient.

I have a lot of other hypo symptoms so am wondering if like this user self medicating may be worth it - F'or what it's worth, my blood results never showed I was HypoT. But I had all the symptoms (fatigue, brain fog, heat/cold intolerance, joint pain, loss of outer third eyebrows, etc). I finally saw a private endo (I'm in the US) who didn't care about the blood results and treated me based upon my symptoms. Secondary?

I diagnosed myself following discovery of a prolactinoma, 40 years after the start of having hypo symptoms.

How do you medicate? What is your diet like?

BadHare profile image
BadHare in reply toThyroiditis86

I initially took NDT, then added T3, then just T3, then a mix. T3 only seems fine in summer, but I need NDT in winter.

I'm vegetarian & avoid processed food. I supplement with iron, vitamin D, B12, & magnesium (currently topical), plus a lot of kefir for K2 & probiotics, & lots of fruit, veg, nuts & seeds. I prefer restrictive eating times.

Do you buy your meds online? Xx

Do you buy your medication online? Can you tell me where? What kind of carbs do you have in your diet? x

BadHare profile image
BadHare in reply toThyroiditis86

Greece seems to be out of T3 & there's an issue with my preferred NDT brand, so no meds shopping to be done for a while. :'(

Starchy foods have never agreed with me, so I limit how much I eat, though I seem fine with fruit.

Greece? Can you on me where you buy your meds? Also, if you do have carbs, what do you consider best for someone with central hypothyroidism? x

Hi - as Clutter has said above, you do not have central hypothyroidism and you should not take thyroid meds as your thyroid is healthy. taking meds could be dangerous for you. As has been said, your vitamin d was far too low and that will be causing issues for you. Also it is possible that your ferritin is low, you haven't given us a number, and that will make problems worse. Please supplement your d and check your ferritin, do not take thyroid meds, you don't need them.

BadHare in reply toThyroiditis86

I did.

Do you have a diagnosed issue with your pituitary gland? Please check this before you go gung ho & take something that could make you feel more poorly.

Any advice I give you could be potentially useless as I only eat what suits me, & you don't have my genes, health conditions, or lifestyle. The only absolutes I can think of are don't eat unfermented soya, artificial sweeteners, or anything processed ~ especially seed oils like margarine. Eat as much organic food as you can get or afford, eat kefir for probiotics, & make sure you have enough protein & other essential nutrients.

Have you read the posts & advice re the necessary levels of essential nutrients for thyroid function & hormone conversion on here or any of the other thyroid health websites? Have you tried going gluten or dairy free which helps some people, especially those with autoimmune thyroid disorders.

Perhaps take a look at Chris Kresser's functional medicine website to see if there's anything uselful to you. There are several free e-books & articles specifically on thyroid health or related issues, & diet.

reallyfedup123,

Responding at the end of the thread, rather than to Clutter means that she might not see what you have posted. Which, when you specifically disagree with her, is grossly unfair.

It really isn't that difficult to click on a GREEN Reply button rather than the BLACK Reply at the end of the thread - even on a pad device.

Thanks, Helvella.

Hidden and I disagree so Thyroiditis86 will have to make up her own mind which advice to accept.

I was told by a dermatologist who noticed my orange skin and puffy face when I saw him about a mole on my leg. My NHS endocrinologist is a rude, recently graduated type with no time for anything off the books or on a computer screen (the bloods). Did many give up on being diagnosed by NHS? I am seeing a private endo at the London endocrinology centre, sadly it's not the main man there as he's booked up until Christmas. I have heard of one outside the NHS - Dr P(Ive stupidly forgotten his full name!) but he's apparently a lot like the late Dr Skinner. My current NHS endo says periods stopped because of low weight and hairloss, it's easy for them that way see, but my weight went down becsuse I was in pain when I ate (stomach) and my vision would go funny too and I'd get (and still do) a tightening and swelling around the eyes after I ate. Its beyond at the moment. Cognitive wise, I can't think straight, so I therefore apologise for my messages. I type on my phone as I can't even manage a laptop as it's so overwhelming and my brain fog has got to the stage where I can barley function anymore. I have quit work and am now housebound. 30 years old, nearly no hair left, eyebrows and lashes falling out, aching limbs, feeling immensely tired but plagued with anxiety ridden insomnia, unable to digest foods, reacting to the slightest things around me and yet Dr blames it all on low weight when there's much more to it than that. It's a horrible circular thing I can't get a grasp on which is why I'm desperate for a decent Endos. I've put on a stone and half in 4 months yet the symptoms keep getting worse and worse. I don't know if what I'm eating could be making any condition worsen. I'm gluten free and have tried eliminating other foods but nothing makes a difference
