Hi there - could someone please tell me if my result for the above is okay - it is 11.7 - that is all i was told just now when my doctor rang me - did not want to see me - offered no more than giving me this result - i had also asked for a Homeocysteine test and an MMA test - but there was no mention of that - i would appreciate your help as i am feeling so ill and just do not know where to turn or what to do. Thank you for any input you can give.

You need to know the range, have you got a calcium result ?

Hi there Bantam 12 - No i have not got the ranges nor did he mention anything about calcium - i think that calcium causes kidney and gall bladder stones does'nt it or am i wrong - because i lost a kidney/ adrenal gland and gall bladder to stones. I have just rung the surgery again and asked for the ranges and they will not give them to me - they said i had to go and get them from the surgery - i said i would if i could but that i had a bad fall in the bath this morning and can hardly move - she said oh well then come and get the results when you can and put the phone down - so i will not be able to tell you until i get them.

The top of the range on my results is 6.9 so if your ranges are the same then your pth is high but the ranges from my husbands results are entirely different so can't really guess where you fall.

They usually test parathyroid if calcium is high or low, which can indicate either hyperparathyroidism or hypoparathyroidism.

If hyperparathyroidism is diagnosed and it's primary then the cause is a benign adenoma on one or more of the parathyroid glands. Secondary hyperparathyroidism is often caused by kidney problems but can be other issues. My husband has hyperparathyroidism caused by kidney failure.

I had hyperparathyroidism and now am left with multiple kidney stones caused by the high calcium.

I think you need to find out more details of the tests you have had and why.

Hi there again bantam 12 - i rung the surgery and insisted on speaking to the doctor again - he gave me these results - Parathyroid gland range 1.1 - 6.9 Mol/L - Calcium - 2.37 - 2.39Mol/L - i said to him that i have got CKD and am worried sick - i have to go and see a different doctor on Monday - and it was me who requested the blood tests - but they did not do the Homeocystiene and MMA test - so i will ask again on Monday. Thank you for your help.

Ok so your pth is high, can't quite make out what your calcium result is, if it's 2.37 that's ok .

So you need to find out why your pth is high, if it's secondary due to CKD it can be lowered with medication.

You really should be referred to an Endo who is experienced in parathyroid problems, many aren't.

Thank you Bantam 12 - i really do appreciate the trouble you have taken to help me - i hopefully will be able to get my results sorted on Monday - it is with a doctor who i have never seen before - so fingers crossed - i will also ask for a referral to an Endocronologist - who may or may not be helpful - i did see one a few years ago and he said there was nothing wrong - but one of his colleagues told me i was sub clinical hypothyroid - so i will just have to see what the outcome is. Bless you and thank you so very much.

I have been trying for many years to find out just what is wrong with me - so hopefully i will get there this time. I will let you know the outcome - thank you bantam 12.

Hi there Bantam 12 - my serum calcium is 2.39mmol/L 2.20 - 260mmol/L - serum TSH 2.7 mu/L 0.27 - 4.20mu/L - serum ferritin 144 ug/L 30.00 - 400.00ug/L - these are from my doctor - i said i would let you know what they were. Once again thankyou.

Your calcium level is fine so you need to find out why your parathyroid is high, possibly to do with your kidney function but honestly you might struggle to find a doctor who will investigate.

Your TSH is possibly a tad higher than ideal, around one is usually recommended.

A good Endo with parathyroid experience is what you need, good luck !

Thank you for the reply - my doctor will not refer me to an endocronologist - i am in the process of looking for a new doctor. Thank you so much for your time and the good luck - i am going to need it.

My dad has secondary hyperparathyroid as a consequence of his advanced CKD. His is monitored primarily by his renal consultant rather than an endo. He has frequent regular appointments with her (and adjust all his medications as necessary) and they / her GP practice take regular panels of bloods to monitor/optimise treatment of some of the consequences of his failing kidney function.

Hi there taka - thank you for the input. I am not monitored at all by renal or endo - my doctor will not refer me i am not on any medication for this either, I only get blood tests when i ask for them which is not often - i always have private one's done first and then show them to my doctor who just ignores them. I am worried at the moment because my doctor said that my Parathyroid levels are due to my Vitamin D deficiency - but i cannot take any vitamin D as it causes stones and i have already lost one kidney and gall bladder because of stones and doctors neglect and i have CKD with the one kidney i still have - once again doctors neglect at my CT scan and the contrast dye they gave me - they should have given me a certain tablet before the scan to stop the dye remaining in my kidney and causing it to collapse - i also have very high cholesterol - nothing to do with what i consume - it is because of my Thyroid problems - i even said that to my doctor and she agreed - but still does nothing to help me. My Doctor was giving me tramadol and morphine patches to take at the same time for my osteoarthritis and fybromyalgia - they were making my liver bad so i stopped them - i just do not know what to do now - i feel so lost and alone. I am glad that your Dad is being looked after and i do hope that he gets well and strong. - Ooops - a long one again - sorry - but thank for being kind enough to reply. God bless you and your Dad.

Do you know which stage CKD you have ? It sounds like you should be changing your GP and insisting on a Renal referral, even with mild CKD you should be monitored and given dietary advice.

Hi bantam 12 - no i do not know what stage i am at they do not tell me anything like that - when i have private tests done i keep being told that i must stop smoking and drinking alchohol - but i do not do either - i am going to find another doctor today and hopefully will get some help. Thank you.

PS i did put a reply last evening to your last message - but it is not here now - perhaps i put inappropriate things in about the hospital gastroenterologist who told me the truth and also said that my doctor was lying to me - the gastro said her concsience would not allow her to carry on working for the NHS so she has left - such a shame as she was a lovely person and very genuine - something that is very hard to come by in this day and age with doctors.
