Are you taking levothyroxine and/or any other meds?
Not on levo....
Last August I was on Nature Thyroid (sourced it from US...but it became too expensive £53 for 100 tablet) I stayed on half grain from August to February 2017, my Dr noticed that the TSH levels had come down with taking the Nature thyroid...(But I note in the latest results it has gone slightly higher again) stopped taking in February and the started on Thyroid S......I don't know if this is a coincidence, but when I look back, I think this is when the hair started coming out drastically.
Has of today only taking half a grain of thyroid S.
The test results are saying Ferritin really high could this be why the hair loss is so drastic.
I went gf and dairy free bc someone said I was Hashis with my fluctuating TSH levels over the years.....I stopped eating red meat about 8 weeks ago and feel a lot better.
I'm 18 stone and swim 3 times a wk and have done for 3 years (front crawl) I stopped in February bc of ear infection that's gone now and I've now started back swimming.
I don't know whether high ferritin would cause hair loss or not. However you are undermedicated as most people feel better when their TSH is 1.0 or lower and since you're on NDT you want your FT3 at the top of the range but it doesnt' look like they've tested it. Your FT4 is low which along with the highish TSH indicates you're undermedicated.
Here are some test results from May 2017
ENDOCRINOLOGY
Thyroid Function
THYROID STIMULATING HORMONE 1.93 mIU/L 0.27 - 4.20
FREE THYROXINE 14.7 pmol/L 12.00 - 22.00
TOTAL THYROXINE(T4) 97.9 nmol/L 59.00 - 154.00
FREE T3 4.7 pmol/L 3.10 - 6.80
Thyroid Antibodies
THYROGLOBULIN ANTIBODY 12.340 IU/mL 0.00 - 115.00
THYROID
Back in May, has you can see, the TSH was coming down up until this point I had been on the Nature thyroid. About March, is when I started with the Thyroid S I am now wondering if the fillers in the Thyrois S aren't good for me.
Also, do you think I maybe better on Levo.
Low b12 can cause hairloss and red meat is a good source of it and you have stopped eating meat ?.B12 under 500 can cause neurological problems...so it needs to be at least that..in fact the recommended level of B12 for hypos is more the top of the range, even 900-1000. You could supplement that and take a b complex along side it to balance the b's out. Undermedication and over medication can cause hairloss as can menopause.
Thanks for the reply.
Interesting, my B12 and folate was 621 in January/17 a 416 range ng/L 211-911 in July /15.
Any recommendations where to get the B12 from and what make (I actually met a Dr Chandy at a thyroid conference in Harrogate, back in 2015 along with a Dr Peatfield and some other Drs.... Great conference it was they haven't had one since to my knowledge)
I have been taking a slow release B vit.....But now I'm wondering with the super high Ferritin whether it ok to take this.
Also take selenium, was taking 2000 vit c.....omega 3,
I've been taking Digestive Enzymes by Solgar and I feel this makes a difference to my toilet habits.
also take Acidophilus 20 billion every other day.
I was taking Nutri Adrenal Extra up until last year and someone said to stop it with Hashis. Prior to that I had been taking 2/3 a day for about 16 months (hair used to come out then, but nothing compared to now.
Hi I just took some b12 and a complex from a local herbalist when I got mine up and only took for a month.Recommended on here a lot is to buy some sublingual methylcobalamin lozenges 1000mcg and take one daily for your B12, also take a B Complex to balance all the B vitamins and boost your low folate level. Make sure the B Complex contains methylfolate not folic acid.
Hey, thanks for that.... I was getting the slow release complex from H&B.....I will source on line.... Great 👍🏽
Your labs suggest you are hypo. TSH is really not a good indicator (though yours is high) Free T4 and Free T3 give a better diagnostic reading. Hypo does cause hair loss. I would attribute that to the hair loss over the other things you have mentioned.
