I've now been on them 5 weeks. Last two weeks when walking to work which is a ten to 25 minute walk I get terrible muscle pains in bottom calve on both legs down to my feet. Would this be due to thyroid or tablets? It's just started. All I can describe is a burning sensation when walking.

The burning pain you feel could be plantar fasciitis. It is often a problem associated with hypothyroidism, not hyperthyroidism.

Have you been given any blood tests since you were put on carbimazole? I don't know how often blood testing is done in people who are hyperthyroid, but since you haven't been on the tablets long it means that you should be checked early to make sure the dose is right for you.

Do you know your blood test results from before you started it?

Make sure you ask for copies of blood tests each time you are tested, so you can monitor how well you are doing.

I will ask for results as I am still getting to grips with my diagnoses. Back Monday so I went to my doctors for blood test before I see consultant again. Just started my first course of carbozole. I've also put alot of weight on quite quick which is frustrating. Leg pain unbearable at times but I have to walk to work and back as where I work is a 15minute walkaline. Working with little childrenam on my feet all day

I found I didn't walk all that much when I was first diagnosed and being treated. My lower legs got very tired.

I used to do a lot of long distance walking so it was a big loss. I know what you mean about your lower legs aching and I probably felt that too. My muscles were really weak at the beginning before I was diagnosed. My hobby is photography and I found that when I got down low to photograph something I didn't have the strength in my legs to get back up again unaided. To begin with I thought it was because I had too much in my backpack. Eventually things went back to normal though and I'm back to long distance walks again.

Sent know about your burning feet, when I developed plantar fasciitis I got out of bed one morning and this agonising pain shot straight from my foot to my brain. I've never felt anything like it. It wasn't hot and it only hurt when I put my foot down to walk, it was a really sharp almost 'electric' kind of pain that I'm never experienced before and don't want to feel ever again. It was like there was a direct link from my heel to my brain.

I googled and found exercises that I could do for that, did them all, probably overkill but between that and rolling my foot over a frozen bottle of water I was able to get back to normal but I think I was lucky to get it sorted out in a relatively short time. I also discovered that I have to wear good supporting shoes, no more flip-flops or bare feet for me I'm afraid.

So to answer your question, I'd say it's your condition rather than the medication, but that's only my opinion.

Hello Kazbar

I also experienced the same muscle pain in my legs and calves when I was initially put on 20mg Carbimazole by the Endocrine Consultant. It was very painful to walk and I had musclecramp in my calves in bed a lot and so I phoned the Endo Consultant's secretary and explained what was happening,, she promised to speak to the Consultant and then phone me back. His advice was to reduce the Carbimazole to 15mg and this seemed to sort outthe muscle calve pain when walking and the night muscle cramp in my legs stopped too.

Perhaps is is worth ringing the Secretary and explaining what you are experiencing as I did? Good Luck...... all thyroid conditions are a roller coaster ride, but it can and will improve when your medication is at the correct level for you. Sending a ((hug)) for you today. xx

It could also be worth looking into vitamins, minerals n other chemicals that get outta whack with hyperthyroid - my magnesium went down to next to nothing which can cause cramps. Acetyl-l-carnitine is another chemical that can be low in both hyper n hypo and causes muscle ache but I'd recommend researching it as it blocks the absorption of thyroid hormone so might push you lower if you're hypo and finally muscle weakness is common, I went on protein supplements to help restore lost muscle but be wary of anything containing soy.
