Recently you posted about having a TSH of nearly 14.

Any mental health problems you have will be made much worse with such poorly controlled hypothyroidism.

I don't know exactly what you are being treated for, in terms of mental health problems, or why the mental health team want to prescribe this drug for you, and I'm not a doctor, so I'm reluctant to say anything about whether or not you would be better off taking the suggested drug or not, because I simply don't know.

One question you could ask is are there any other choices of medication available which don't affect your thyroid.

Have you ever self-medicated? Because your doctors are doing a really rubbish job...

the want me on the quetiapine for the anxiety which in the letter states is from poor thyroid and the death of my mum

no way will i take it after the horror stories ive read

im actually being put back on trazadone at my request as i did wll on them for a long time and they helped me sleep

ive added bitiron (a t3/t4 combo) to my T3

doses as follows

25 t3

bitiron (50 t4 12.5 t3)

12.5 t3

still feeling undermedicated but its only been 4 or 5 days with the t4 added

I hope it all works out for you.

I'm shocked by what the doctors are doing to you.

1) They wanted to give you quetiapine for anxiety.

2) They admit you needed it because your thyroid is poorly treated.

3) Their "solution" is to give you a drug that makes your thyroid function even worse.

Insane!

At least you've ended up on something that you are comfortable about taking. Good luck. :)

Hi Mandy,

I've read a few links on here that state T3 has a better effect for treating depression than anti-depressants.

Could you self-medicate with NDT or T3, & see how you feel on that, before taking something with such negative side effects.

Yes Leverette, I too have read several times that T3 (T3 = thyroid medication,) works better for depression. I have also heard that those with depression should be checked for low thyroid too. Also that Psychiatrists should be checking for thyroid conditions before prescribing depression pills.

Also I think Low or deficient vitamin B12 blood levels should also be checked too before prescribing depression pills.

Also I have seen in some top Thyroid videos that if you have Low thyroid (Hypothyroidism) or even an idea you might have undiagnosed low thyroid keep off the depression pills as they will make you fall further and make your conditions worse.

(I should really be writing this to Mandy, Leverette shouldn't I :) )

I take 300-500mls of kefir a day, as it has both B12 & K2, plus the probiotics. I make it with grass fed organic whole milk, for the additional vitamin D.

kefir is good

i used to have some many years ago and i stopped doing it

maybe i need to try and get some more and start back up on it as theres so many benefits from taking it

It's made a big difference to my wellbeing, on top of the NDT & T3. I try to get my nutrients from food rather than pills, so stick to a clean food diet.

Chris Kresser recommends it very highly for healing gut issues, though I initially started taking it for B12 & K2, before I read his articles.

Just remembered Mandy, vitamin B3 (Niacin) is known as 'the' depression cure.

I have recently read - (not sure if it is true,) but apparently years ago a clever Doctor managed to get mental patients out of mental institutions by giving them niacin. (3 types of niacin, it has to be the flushing one, that makes you have a flush.) they then got their lives back on track again and got jobs and married, this Doctor measured his success by how many got their lives back again. No idea of this Doctors name, maybe someone has more info on this ?

mandy72 profile image
mandy72 in reply to Coastwalker

i took niacin a while ago and it made my arms feel like they were on fire so threw it out after one dose

might look into that thanks

but......whats a flushing one?

Some info on this website Mandy72,

spasticgoat.com - Niacin the depression cure

- explains the 3 Niacin types.

It says best is 'pure nicotinic acid' it also makes you have a flush. Though do check this out yourself, I must check my own vitamin B supplements as I am sure B3 must be among my own vitamin B Complex.

I have only just come across this B3/Niacin information again, I had first heard it mentioned in the videos of 'The Truth About Cancer' by Ty Bolinger

Coastwalker profile image
Coastwalker in reply to mandy72

Maybe feeling your arms were on fire could have been be the flushings they mention ?

mandy72 profile image
mandy72 in reply to Coastwalker

i thought of that too

i just went through my stash cupboard and i lied i didnt throw them out but these are the ones i have

uk.iherb.com/Nature-s-Plus-...

might give them a go again and see

I would be inclined to read up more about the different types of Niacin then decide Mandy.

Do let us know if you do try them again. I recall on one video of mentions that psychiatrists should be trying this way forward too, before prescribing depression medications.
