Hi all, I'm new here. was just diagnosed today. Have been feeling so unwell for around 4 months. Been back and forth to the doctor but this week had bloods done
Got my results today and he said it has shown overactive thyroid. Collected a prescription for Carbimazole 5mg to be taken x 3 a day and propranolol 40mg to be taken 1-3 times a day. My pulse was 120 at the doctor on Tuesday.
Now have to wait for an appointment with specialist and a neck on my neck, as I have a rather large swelling.
Can anybody tell me what to expect, I'm so fed up of feeling so ill. I have 3 daughters aged 6, 5 and 6 months really struggling at the moment, thank god I have a fantastic husband!

I hope you start to feel better soon. Hopefully the carbimazole will ease things quickly until you get to see the specialist. In the meantime keep up good nutrition and plenty of rest.
Hi MrsA3, I'm so glad you found your way here so quickly. This is a site map for The Stop the Thyroid Madness website and if you scroll down to the links for Graves, you'll get good information about it. Before getting down to that you will also see a link Hyper Like Symptoms, you could check that out as well. Also, read the Selenium page. stopthethyroidmadness.com/s...
Ask that doctor for a print of the blood tests you had.
It sounds like you have a very swollen thyroid and hopefully the carbimazole will start to relieve some symptoms.
I had an overactive Thyroid gland and first noticed a sudden loss of weight, then I developed a ravenous appetite but still kept losing weight. My pulse was 160 sitting still and I was so hot and sweaty even in the cold winter. I became so weak and breathless I could hardly get up the stairs. Also had shaky hands, swollen legs and feet in the evenings and was extremely irritabe
Then my neck swelled up and my eyes bulged and then GP knew what it was.
He didn't treat me as I was sent immediately to the Endocrine specialist at hospital.
I was treated with Carbimazole but do not know the dosage - only that I took 4 tabs 3 X a day.
I was unfortunately overdosed and suffered agonising muscle cramps and the dosage was reduced and after a few months stopped altogether.
It did return and I had a sub-total Thyroidectomy which was a successful cure.
This was decades ago and treatment may be different and better now. I was not given beta blockers for instance
Hi, I'm sorry your feeling so ill, hope this gets better soon.
You will find some good advice here so stick around, I've been given lots of support.
I'm assuming your waiting for an appointment with an endocrinologist? When you go, take a list of your symptoms with you, I wish I had of for my first one as I forgot half of them and while I was talking to him I kept remembering others. He was lovely though and very encouraging, so I hope your as lucky as me in this respect. Also take a list of questions you might have as this is easy to forget as well.
Thank you all for your replies, I will definitely ask for a print off from the bloods. I'm really hoping the meds start to work soon. I feel so weak, and the sweats are awful. My doctor thought at first that it was anaemia, then anxiety that was causing my symptoms but I never felt better off the meds so did the tests. I must admit that I thought it was my thyroid before that. I'm 28 and honestly have never felt so poorly in my life. It's hard with 3 little ones to look after, but there's people around to help when I have bad days which it good.
