Diagnosed with overactive thyroid today.

Hello all,

I have been suffering with horrendous hot sweats, palpitations and excessively watery, glazed over eyes as well as itchy skin. The sweats and watering eyes are taking their toll, and the itchy skin comes and goes.

Last week I saw my GP, purely for travel jabs, (I didn't mention my symptoms as I thought it was a female age thing to be honest!), however, due to a previous DVT and a long flight coming up, he requested a blood clotting test.

Tonight, my GP has telephoned me, (only had the blood test yesterday), to request that I see him on Monday as the 'extra' blood tests show an over active thyroid. Excellent service for a GP I'm sure you will agree!

I'm quite worried now as the symptoms have been around for about 6 months, gradually getting worse. Will he prescribe me something which will stop the symptoms does anyone know? Have I left it so long that I could have caused some kind of damage to myself?

Thanks so much for any advice you may be able to give.

Debra.

I was disgnosed last October and had a problem for quite a long time before that, something like 4 months.

They will probably give you drugs to suppress the thyroid while you wait to see a specialist. There is lots of advice about tests etc on thyroid uk website I did not look on here and have only recently informed myself - wish I did it sooner.

I had iron and Vit d deficiency which I didn't know about until very poorly. The condition causes malabsorption so be good to keep an eye on this too - if I had informed myself I would have got these tested regularly.

Good luck with it all.

Hi Debra, I've also been diagnosed as hyperthyroid and experienced many of the same things, I've been prescribed 20mg Carbimazole to calm down the thyroid, propronal to regulate heart beat and Apixiban to thin blood. At first I thought nothing was happening but two weeks in and I'm beginning to feel a bit better.

I was in denial about this for ages and ignored the symptoms to I get your concern about damage but don't worry the body heals itself really well went treated right

All the best x

Thank you, that's great news to me. Interesting about the blood thinner as that was the original test. Feeling quite ill today due to the pain at the back of my eyes (like a really bad sinus headache), so hopefully Monday will be the start of a change, like you. Thank you so much x

Hi Debs1961,

I was in your position 2 years ago. Exact same symptoms which I thought were down to my age (I was 51 at the time) but which turned out to be hyperthyroidism. I'd also been struggling with them for about 6 months before diagnosis. Mine was picked up eventually by a gastroenterologist (the digestive symptoms were becoming difficult to deal with) and I started on Carbimazole the very next day. In the end I had my thyroid gland removed entirely as I was never stable on Carbimazole. I'm also an insulin dependent diabetic so things were really difficult. Unfortunately since then I've also developed Thyroid Eye Disease which makes everything before seem like a walk in the park!

Hi Sarah

Sorry for the delay, been very poorly this week. Finally started Carbimazole Friday evening and propranolol for the shakes and high pulse rate. Not much change yet, feeling very tense and quite upset by everything! lol, but hope that's normal? I have had terrible trouble with my eyes too, constant watering and a fog effect, but my GP just said visit the opticians, so I will.

Hope you feel better soon too, it's so debilitating.

Debbie
