Hypothyroidism/menopause/depression ?

Hi all, I've posted on here now and then and always got great advice.

I wanted to tell you about my latest developments, hopefully it may help others.

I've been suffering with depression off and on for over 20 years. Underactive thyroid diagnosed about 18 years ago. Felt menopausal about 4 or 5 years.

I've never been one for exercise, but I've joined a gym. 4 weeks ago I started doing a healthy eating regime and 2 weeks later I joined the gym. I feel so much better! I know they say exercise helps but I've always avoided it! Lol. I absolutely love it

Now I'm not saying that it's a magic cure all but it's helped me loads. I've lost 8lbs, look more toned, have more energy and feel much better in myself. I could say I wish I had done it ages ago but I don't think my mind was in the right place. I'm 56 and want to be healthy and feel well. I've got another 10lbs or so to loose but I've learnt that sometimes your weight doesn't change much but your measurements do. I've lost 1.5 inches off my waist since joining the gym. I lost most of the weight in the 2 weeks I was doing the healthy eating.

Sorry this is getting long!

Just want to say it's never too late, start slowly and build it up. You are worth it!

Good for you! I'm so happy for you. I understand from experience how much effort it can take to overcome the low energy of depression and get out there and do something about it, so I congratulate you on that.

I'd like to add to what you said that once you have this experience you can never go back to square one. Even if you have setbacks or take some time off, once you've done this you can never undo it, never unlearn it. You can only go forward.

Well done! :-)

I agree Sue. I've suffered the same with depression and exercise is the one thing that makes a huge difference to me. I bought a road bike a few months ago and love it. I'm up to around 45 miles in one ride at the moment, but am building up to be able to go further.

That's great. Well done! Unfortunately I never learnt how to ride a bike. I struggle with the one at the gym! Lol X

I just remembered my mum used to have a brisk walk during her lunch hour to fend off hot flushes, so not only depression can be remedied but also symptoms of menopause.

it's good to read a positive comment -sometimes these forums can get be a bit negative -understandably because people are struggling to get the right treatment, dosage etc. But it's good to hear from someone who is doing something that is working and feels better. Keep the good work up! :)
