A great documentary about our gut bacteria and the role it plays in the growth of diseases such as Diabetes. Changes in gut bacteria could be affecting not only our bodies but our mental and emotional health.... a no-brainer, really. Scientific researchers get excited about samples of faeces and talk about the future of biotics being designed for individual needs. And warn that popping our biotic pills makes no difference without altering our eating habits. Meanwhile, the dirt our food is grown in is critical to the bacteria supporting cycle...ground, guts and elimination. An experiment in diet showed we could alter our gut bacteria within a month, especially if we cut out junk food and ramp up a variety of vegetable fibre that the bacteria like to feed on: episode one today (but plenty of info on the net)
I joined the british equivalent of the American Gut project and sent off a sample for analysis. The results were very interesting/ differed from the norm!! Once my brain fog clears I will do some further research.
I am already gluten and lactose free due to Hashi's (reduced the TPO antibodies) and was previously diagnosed egg and chicken intolerant, so you can see my diet is not run of the mill. I make a lot of meals from scratch with fresh ingredients and eat very little processed food. Diet is incredibly important to health. You wouldn't put diesel in a petrol car!!
There have been a number of interesting programmes on TV over recent months with Michael Moseley and Prof Tim Sanders (I think that's his name)

I have hashis, and quite high antibodies at last count in april. I am gluten free and eat organic and fresh etc but listening to this has determined me go get more veggies down. Easy to slip. Idnt inulin good for regulating blood sugar levels too. I can't rember why I didn't follow it up as mine is dysregulated since replacement, but seem to recall something contra. Must look again.
I didn't know about Tim and tempted get his diet myth book - worthwhile reading the critical reviews on it to.
Yes I have read Tim's book- a very good read. Thanks for reminding me it was his book!! Brain fog is a terrible thing but at least it should improve if I can get my meds right.
The gut project sample was done after going gluten and lacto free! I did reduce my Tpo's too from 120 down to 20. I know some on here have TPO's in high hundreds but I have always been sensitive to the slightest thing being out of kilter!
I bought some inulin and took one dose with some rather iffy consequences! I will try it again but need to read up on it again!! This disease is just such............!
Took me a year on strict gluten free to get my TPO's right down. GP thinks I am crazy!
I am still in disbelief that mine didn't even mention autoimmune disease. Seems usual. Good luck with dosage. I keep slipping off either side of correct. Resigned to realising it's more management than I realised. So mmy things seem to affect absorbtion.
But that's the problem, there is no "correct" dose. Docs think there is but it is about how you feel and how your symptoms are. I need to be well below 1 for TSH and doc has threatened osteoporosis and heart attacks if I stay low. i said i prefer a life!

I'm taking Naturethroid so my t4 os very low. My new lady doc knew this and only tests for t3 while I'm on t3 containing replacement. I was pleasantly surprised. I need to revise information on replacement, how it works. At this stage, apart from all the other factors that impact on absorbtion, I wonder if frequency needs more attention
I mean, do our thyroids just dump one or two loads of T4 a day into our bloodstream? Might be worth flagging up

It is amazing the diversity of health issues that start in the gut. And how many problems just disappear once you have your digestion/digestive tract/diet sorted out.

Yes and many children with autism also have gut problems and benefit from a natural diet. I got something called spore away that is helping. Along with digestive enzymes and apple cider vinegar.

That made me laugh katiekatie.. If I swallowed an apple pip when I was a child, my dear much missed Mom would say 'you'll grow an apple tree in your stomach by doing that!'. Spore away would have come in very handy back then.. thinking on it maybe it is the apple tree that is causing my gut issues after all lol x

My pleasure. I was watching C4 on world's best diet last evening and Kimchi came up as a great fermented food staple w loads if B12. I havnt got P A so far as I'm aware, but am deficient. The potential problem with fermented foods seems to be the high salt content. Just started taking an interest in fermented foods and will check to see if it can be done with lactic acid. Just vaguely remember that but could be mistaken.
I'm particularly interested in the gut connection with autoimmune disease, hekbell, as daily spoonfuls of organic sauerkraut and avoiding gluten has worked miracles for me (better than any probiotic I've ever tried). All the symptoms I'd had for years of gastritis, H/pylori, acid reflux, gall bladder pain, IBS, etc. disappeared.
Hopefully, the microvilli in my gut has recovered and is enabling me to better absorb B12 and other essential nutrients,
