Do you also have a low parathyroid result and a diagnosis of hypoparathyroidism ? Low calcium on it own is hypocalcemia and has different causes to hypoparathyroidism.

This website explains very clearly the main types of parathyroid problems

Primary, secondary or tertiary.

parathyroid.com

There is even an app to buy (£3.50) that can help with diagnosis if you have vitamin D, calcium and PTH results to put in

calciumpro.com

If you have gluten intolerance or coeliacs then this can cause really poor absorption of nutrients from the gut, leading to low vitamin D, / Calcium or other vitamins especially magnesium, selenium and zinc.

Low levels of Vitamin D, calcium and magnesium levels can all upset/affect parathyroids.

I have consistently below range pth and calcium (if I don't supplement). My old GP actually googled my pth result as he had no idea. Still no diagnosis...Vit D hovers in the low end of normal range. Have pressed for an endo referral.

Do you have Hashimoto's?

If so, have you tried or considered going gluten free?

Low vitamin D and calcium could be due to undiagnosed gluten intolerance.

The calcium pro app is designed so you can clearly show it to your GP /endo. Very easy to use, especially for understanding different types of Hyperparathyroidism. your need to have blood test result details for vitamin D, calcium and PTH. Just add the data to your down-loaded app and it will plot the resulting diagnosis on a clear to understand graph

Hi Slow Dragon.

Yes, I have Hashimotos and am gluten free because of intolerance. I looked at the calcium app but it seems more useful for hyperparathyroidism than hypo. It's pretty hard to find info on hypoPT and my GP was out of his depth, asking repeatedly if I'd had neck surgery. All I know is that my pth level is 1 (normal range from 2) and my calcium hovers around 2 so below range too. I did wonder if it was possible to have anti-parathyroid antibodies attacking the gland. Or can TgAB cause these problems too?

Late reply ........Have you considered low magnesium as a cause of low Pth

Goggle hypoparathyroidism and low magnesium

endocrineweb.com/conditions...

A lot of thyroid patients seem to be low in magnesium - can also be low in magnesium due to gluten intolerance.

Also if been treated for high stomach acid with PPI's (often when hypo is low stomach acid - similar symptoms but needs different treatment.)

Hello Tracyxx

I've suffered from this for 5 years. There's no cure only treatment. It had been the most troublesome process. I've had to repeatedly submit to ER care. Please take this medical condition as serious as doctors have stressed it to be. It is life threatening. Excessively low calcium causes Arrhythmia. This can lead to a stroke, seizures, or even death. I was diagnosed in 2014, I think my parathyroids were damaged during an MRI exam. The technician refused to allow me to remove my wedding rings. I spent one hour and thirty minutes under the machine. This condition is very serious. Please seek medical attention and follow the doctors orders. It is a rare disease. Best to you and yours. Hypo parathyroid I am causes hypocalcemia and other serious medical conditions.
