Those summaries are so grossly wrong, I wonder were they would start!
''When TSH is elevated but less than 10 mU/L, no consistent evidence supports an association with symptoms'' - well I had 47 of them with a TSH of 4.
HarryE, I signed up for this and then got examples and thought I had lost my marbles!! Relieved to know that you and no doubt others think the same. Your quoted example sums it up.The whole thing needs a complete rewrite with respect to how thyroid illness is diagnosed, but of course they wouldn't be interested in that!!
Have just had a look at BMJ request posted by Lynn. That is about research work, so will see if they come up with any new thinking or are still pedalling same stuff!!
The fact that they are still using the (in)famous 2006 BTA statement that was so thoroughly (and academically!) debunked by the late Dr John Lowe is beyond belief!!! And don't get me started on Weetman and his 'somatoform disorders'... Why are most of the reference papers so out of date? (One even goes back to 1977 - nearly 40 years old!!!) Are they so full of their own importance that they feel no further research is necessary? I have to admit that I am in two minds whether to sign up for this one (I have for the BMJ one) as I'm not sure whether I would be able to present a reasoned argument without my exasperation and temper getting in the way. I shall sleep on it and may just apply for the hell of it though...
If you click on the 'How up-to-date is this topic' link on the left hand bar you will bring up a page headed 'Last revised in February 2011'!!! WTF???
Not applying for this, even for the hell of it...
Well I'm definitely convinced it's all down to something else prior to thyroid diagnosis that has set it all off - I'm not talking hair loss or dry skin either! It could also be genetic, so something else in the adrenal axis, or prior infection leading to autoimmunity! I've been researching all these things for months now - and will continue to do so.
