For those researching for info on Levothyroxine interaction with Caffeine, I was getting sever insomnia and jitteriness, I tried changing many things to try and error but I was 100% relieved when I stopped all caffeine containing drinks.

As well as coffee there are also other things which can interfere with the absorption of thyroid hormones (i.e. Synthroid is the USA levo:-

Hi Shaws ... I didn't mean absorption interference but it is also an interaction that results in worst side effects.

Ah that's interesting - I've always wondered if it was the caffeine or something peculiar to coffee. Apparently tea contains as much caffeine as coffee. So I'm thinking decaf coffee should be fine which is good news for me as I love the taste of coffee :-)

Thats a no go on the decaf, however you will be fine if you wait an hour for reg, decaf or tea. Thats before and after, calcium 4 hrs, iron 3 or 4hrs.

Interesting so you think this is due to the coffee I have immediately after the medication not the ones I have afterwards? It worth a trial.

Hi Ali101,

i have for years struggled with sleep, i always put it down to fibromyalgia pain not thinking my levothyroxine & caffine combo would be a cause, though with these conditions i get depression, i feel more out of frustration than anything else, but I've been on a depression medication now for over a year & for the last 3 months I've slept a solid 8 or 9 hours but as yet I dont feel the benefit of that sleep, i hope it will follow soon, but i will certainly look into stopping caffine, that said i dont have much caffine drinks a day drink lots of water xx

Hi Honora ... let's know what happened if you cut coffee, I got immediate results but everyone is different, I hope it helps.

I am working on keeping adrenaline down. I just have one organic decaf coffee in the morning to this I add half teaspoon of d-rib rose teaspoon of organic coconut oil and splash of almond milk. See Dr.myhills site for details. Trials for energy recommend coffee and d-rib rose.

I became intolerant to caffeine in my early 40s, then hypothyroid in my early 50s. Tea is as bad as coffee, and I can't even drink hot chocolate after about 6pm. I life on decaff coffee. It would be interesting to know just how many people with adult onset hypothyroidism are also intolerant to caffeine.

I cannot sleep if I have caffeine in the evening, I'm known in my family for high sensitivity to caffeine and in my early 30s I'm hypothyroid. I'm 33 now!

I stopped drinking tea and coffee after 6pm and it really improved my ability to get to sleep (now good and ready for bed by 10pm)... just need to crack the waking up at 3am thing and I'll be sorted! x

I also have the early waking!! Are you optimized on T4 replacement?

in reply toAli1101

Hi Ali1101,

Only just started meds (10 days ago), my sleep has been out of kilter for a few months, I've always been an early riser but anything before 5am is just unpleasant! x

I'm almost 2 months on a low dose 50 then now 75 mcg, I cannot wait for the next increment to see full effect. I just want to get my 6-7 hours of sleep, it has been rare for me but I see a slight improvement so far. Wish you all the best :)
