speaking of Europe & horse... signed anyway

despite farmers burning a college field close by 'ears ago, I'm afraid GMO is already here - but not in the vast USA quantities thank goodness.

Well, we have to stop it spreading any further. Goodness me! We've got enough problems as it is! We Don't want to go eating insecticides!

It will most probably be years before we find out how much damage to humans it may have. Aren't these 'powerful' companies determined to push their products.

I Don't think they are particularly concerned about the products as such, they just want the money, and all ways of getting it are good! Despite who gets hurt. Look what's going on with vaccines at the moment!

I think the effects are already making themselves felt in the US... We Don't want it over here!

There is a nice Scottish word which describes their actions: 'sleekit'. ie.

sly, crafty, or sneaky

The EU has recently made moves to devolve decision making on growing GMO to individual member states. At the moment I understand there is an almost blanket ban on GMO across Europe instituted by the EU. This 'devolvement' might sound good but it's very bad news. It means that if a state bans GMO the likes of Monsanto can go in and sue that state. Monsanto is currently suing certain US states and global states I understand. Guatemala, Vermont, Hawaii. If the GMO ban was at EU level it would be much more difficult for Monsanto to fight. I believe this move to give responsibility for GMO to individual member states is a stealth move that we will live to regret in years to come. It paves the way for GMO in Europe.

euractiv.com/sections/agric... I think there are more recent developments on this. Also, in the search box key in GMO and a variety of interesting articles will appear.

I wondered how labelling would work in the EU. In the US the GMO industry has gained the right not to label food as GMO. So people don't know they are eating GMO. Do we really think that if a GMO product is imported into the EU that the US company will provide different packaging to list GMO ingredients. Another article about a politician promising GMO labelling despite TTIP. euractiv.com/sections/agric... So we have a politicians promise. Do we have any legislation in place in advance of TTIP or as a requirement of TTIP?

Don't get me started on the whole patenting seeds issue....

A similar trade agreement is being brokered between US and Australia. In secret.

I bet that your local MP candidates will not be able to answer any questions on this subject. Try them and see.

And don't forget to sign the petition. Thanks to Grey for posting.

I think that sounds like bad news for lots of reasons! It really should be an EU ban.

I'm just glad i live in France, where people take food so seriously. For example, I noticed that when the use of soy was getting more and more wide-spread in the UK, in France they started using it, but now less and less products have it in. It was in processed bread - now it isn't, etc. People just Don't want it! And I believe that's the same with GMOs. I just pray that it lasts!

What a terrible world we live in when a company can sue people for not buying their products! It's as if General Motors says we all have to buy one of their cars whether we want one or not! It's crazy!

Signed the petition. Thanks Greygoose. I've only recently learned about GMOs in food in the U.S. And their effects so I sincerely hope it doesn't come to Europe anytime soon.

Exactly! Man is so arrogant, he always thinks he knows better than nature. Well, he really, really doesn't!
