Feeling awful on thyroxine

Feeling just awful, am on 125mcg thyroxine. Dr says my blood tests are ok but I am having terrible problems walking. I have had lots of stumbles, broken an ankle, broken big toe. To be honest I am at the end of my rope, I am late fifties but feel 100!

Babas, Can you post your recent thryoid results with the lab ref ranges to help members advise? Your GP practice manager or receptionist should be able to supply a printout on request.

Stumbling and balance issues can be due to low/deficient B12 so ask your GP to test B12 and folate, vitamin D and ferritin. All can be low/deficient in hypothyroid patients and can cause musculoskeletal pain, fatigue and low mood similar to hypothyroid symptoms.

As Clutter suggests it could be B12 too. I have PA with regular injections but when on levothyroxine I was lucky not to stumble and I am very sorry you have broken some bones but I was completely stiff and so full of pain it was as if I had untreated rheumatoid. I assume that's what some would call fibromyalgia, muscle joint pain, couldn't raise arms to comb hair, could only shuffle about. It was horrible and I thought I'd never, ever improve.

Anyway, to cut a long story short when T3 was added I had an "immediate" improvement. Not perfect and eventually moved onto T3 alone and I am fine now.

Ask your GP if he would consider adding 20mcg of T3 daily to a reduced 50mcg (or even 10mg to a 25mcg reduction). It may be helpful.

In the meantime, get all the other tests to eliminate them as a cause. It's amazing that we say 'in normal level' when we might well be at the bottom of normal, instead of towards the upper end of normal.

I do feel for you and I couldn't ever have imagined that a medication to make you better, actually might make you far worse.

This is an excerpt:

Allergic Reactions

Traditional levothyroxine tablets contain a variety of excipient ingredients, such as food dyes, alcohol, magnesium stearate, povidone and talc that can cause allergic reactions. The Full Prescribing Information included with every levothyroxine prescription lists the ingredients.

Exposure to even minute quantities of allergy-triggering ingredients can cause a reaction in susceptible people. For example, an allergy to a drug's inactive ingredients can cause a rash or a GI reaction such as diarrhea by aggravating the underlying celiac disease or lactose intolerance.5 Often, people who experience these side effects simply stop taking their levothyroxine medicine, a common reason for undesirably high TSH levels and a return of thyroid disease symptoms. If you experience a reaction after taking the medication, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.

I felt MUCH worse on Levo (50mcg to start) so my doctor pulled me off it until I saw an Endo.

I was really irritable, felt worse and even had a feinting episode.

I've now been to the Endo and having further tests done but he thought it may be too much for my system to take from scratch so I'm building up again from 25mcg every other day to see how that goes.
