I think we already have disasters here in the UK already by the amount of unsatisfied 'customers' who have joined Thyroiduk.org. This is one link and there was another post by a distraught husband a while ago about his young wife who committed suicide and left him distraught and 3 young children without their mother due to her hypothyroidism But I assume the death certificate would probably have said 'suicide while balance of mind was disturbed' rather than undertreated hypothyroidism. This is another story if you haven't read it before.

I have changed the previous link.

I am 56 yrs old and was diagnosed with hypothyroidism at the age of 50 yr, before this I was so drastically tired almost to the point of passing out, I would fall asleep at work in my lunch break, I was having palpations at 3am each morning and I thought it was a panic attack, my GP prescribed beta blockers I took one and felt like I was dying, so I went back and my GP prescribed an iron tablet, I was still so tired almost passing out, when I went for surgery for removal of a ganglion on my wrist, I was put out and when I was waking the nurse thought I was dead, my pulse was so low, BP was 100/50 before the op, eventually my GP did a blood test and it revealed an under active thyroid, before she did the blood test she said "ARE YOU REALLY THAT TIRED" I said yes I am, I feel like I am dying. It is as though the GP did not believe me, I was complaining about really heavy periods for 10 years, they were so bad I had to wear incontinent pads to protect myself, people thought it was funny, it wasn't funny to me having to change my clothes 3 or 4 times a day it was like bleeding to death. After I started taking the levothyroxine 25mg I started to feel alittle better, then it was changed to 50mg then 75mg and then 100mg which seems to suit me although I do get tired, but am taking supplements of vitamins now. I am having awful hot flushes at the moment, sweating and that is not normal for me, I feel really ratty, I feel like I want to explode, then I feel so down I want to cry but I don't like crying, I know this is my menapause, I need to research it, I need to find something that is natural to help with the hot flushes.

Stray, a member who can't take HRT was recommended sage and primrose by her GP. She gets it from Holland & Barrett.

I found that exercise 3 - 4 times a week along with fresh ginger tea worked for me with the hot flashes. Give it a try.

Hi Stray

This is a good place to look for natural alternatives for menopause.

I used Progestelle from here

womhoo.com/

Both sites have lots of information.

I went to the royal London homeopathic hospital and was prescribed (on the nhs) lachesis muta 30c sublingual spray 50mls and it works like a miracle. You can go on the nhs if your doctor will refer you, there is no form for it as it is discouraged but it is a really nice hospital and well worth the travelling. You should be able to get this over the counter too, and not too expensive. The directions was to take it twice a week. Your symptoms could also be adrenals, which require supplements and nutri adrenal extra, if you buy Dr Peatfield's book it will explain how to deal with it.

Hi Fennel. I have never heard of that lachesis muta? Any info would be appreciated as I am curious. Is it for menopause related symptoms or the thyroid ? Thx :) X

it is for menopause symptoms like sweating, and it is the diluted venum of a snake. I find it very helpful but you would do well to look it up and make up your mind if it will be good for you. Homeopathy works by giving a substance that is diluted many times so there is no danger to it, and the water holds a 'memory' of that substance that gives it the power to work.

I have a goitre but the GP says my levels are OK. I have been to see a specialist who says I am insulin resistant which accounts for my extreme fatigue. As for the menopause my night sweats and hot flushes were so bad and like you I never sweat even when it's hot. I also had really heavy periods. At that time I went on a VLC diet. I also gave up alcohol, nicotene and more importantly caffeine. I lost 9 stone and I realised the flushes had stopped. I have been caffeine free for 6 years. If I ask for caffeine free and someone gives me caffeine I can tell within 10 minutes. That little row of taps along my forehead all start leaking. I can't find anyone else talking about it anywhere on the internet so I report my findings hoping it might help someone else. I also found taking vitamin supplements help with the tiredness - take care.

I'm sorry - could you explain a bit better what you are suggesting - thanks.

Hi LW is that for me? lol. If so I just thought it might be good to have a menopause community as well as could not find one on here and as menopause and thyroid share similar symptoms and can be related as I well know so double whammy to mind body and spirit. I thought maybe separating the 2 (as meno comes up in here too) for better support might be a good start..just my opinion :) X

Oh right - in that case you need to approach a Menopause group about the idea of them applying to HU for a group.

You could also contact HU - support@thyroiduk.org as you never know, they may already have one in the pipeline.. :)

I have been thinking along the same lines, a bigger community including all the patients who are wilfully neglected could band together and form a formidable force, if only we could all get over our differences and pull together. There are lots of thyroid forums and groups, we should be working together.

There is a problem in the B12 world, the nhs policy of only giving a desperately needed jab every 3 months when it is dirt cheap and causes so much suffering while the victims wait out their time to the next jab. Many are having to buy their own stuff and inject themselves to recover their life, but most are obediently suffering and losing their jobs, their relationships and their quality of life.

Multiple sclerosis, this is a dreadful disease and yet the alternative doctors are managing to turn it around in some cases using diet. I have seen youtube blogs telling how to do it, but the mainstream don't want to offer anything other than drugs which don't do a lot. Jack son of Ossie Osmond is a case that escaped the system and recovered his life.

Alzheimers, some of these poor souls are just undiagnosed hypothyroid patients, or B12 patients, who are lost in the system and on some nasty drugs. There are stories of recoveries out there but the mainstream will not routinely check out the thyroid or b12.

Diabetes 2, which in some cases can be reversed in weeks using a diet free from grains and sugars, it just takes education. But the mainstream recommend a diet with lots of servings of whole grain, which is just sugar with an extra molecule that is removed by the body during digestion.

I am sure so many illnesses are paying big money to the drug merchants, and it is in their interests to keep us all sick. There is a need for us to band together and say NO we are not cash cows, we are people who need good advice and support to recover and live healthy lives. We need education and support not drugs.

Interesting comments. I think you are speaking of Ozzie Osbourne's son, Jack? I'm going to see if I can find some news about his recovery on the internet.

yes, Ozzie Osbourne's son Jack is who I meant to say.

Hi Fennel

Unfortunately, each individual group has its own priorities, opinions, agendas and time/financial constraints which would mean that this idea would probably prove impossible in practical terms. :(

Sorry to hear you went through such a rough time. I did and still a been almost 2 yrs since my last period and also thinking severe and long lasting due to my thyroid grrrrr pesky lil gland..lol not sure which came first the meno or the thyroid bu ti was shoved into it so I feel the thyroid was the catalyst to my sudden onset of menopausemania..lol catchy eh?! Anyway I hope you either got a new Doc or this one is now treating you betterand you are doing better as you never mentioned..it is a force to be reckoned with ..awful yes and that is putting it mildly as apparently or so they say only 15-20% of women( so I read )get a severe menopause but...ummm not so sure prolly higher ..Ughhh :(

I am not sure how else we can go about it right now suggestions anyone????? Confused at this time...sorry ladies best I can do unfortunately :( XX
