Mollymoomoo, large amounts of tonic water should be avoided. 1L tonic water contains 83mg quinnine. FDA banned 200-300mg quinnine tablets as potentially damaging to liver and kidneys.
I think the doctor may be the one to answer this question but this is an excerpt:-

Drinking half a liter of tonic water twice a day is more than sufficient for most sufferers of muscle cramping, BUT - beware that quinine has varying deleterious effects on some people, and can be quite dangerous for those with even a mild allergy to it.
Quinine affects the liver, the renal system (kidneys), and the heart, and should only be tried with clearance from one's physician. Even in the low amounts of store bought tonic water, drinking too much may cause adverse effects.
Quinine in any other form, tablets, capsules, etc. should only be used after completely discussing such with one's physician, heart doctor, and any other medical care providers one may have. There is a reason the FDA has not condoned the use of quinine for anything other than uncomplicated malaria. Here's a link from July, 2010 about the warning the FDA issued regarding quinine: articles.latimes.com/2010/j...
