Thanks for the link Escalade. I have read the part of the article about depression and Dr Joanna Moncrieff, and speaking with my day job hat on, I'm a little concerned about her black and white view, because with humans, nothing is ever so cut and dried is it? It's true that no anti-depressant will help everybody, every time, to resolve every illness; but that's true of every medication or treatment available. However, sometimes they can help some people feel a bit better (as she acknowledges they can), which can then give them the clarity of thought, peace of mind, sense of optimism - whatever it might be - to address the problems in their life, or learn how to react more appropriately or usefully, to them. Because if someone is feeling down, or confused, or has learnt through experience, to react negatively or unhelpfully to life events, telling them to work out the cause is pointless, (and a little insensitive) because they probably would have done, if they could have done! For some people, having the help of antidepressants, even as a placebo, can give them respite and thinking room, to go on to therapy or whatever is appropriate for them, to learn more helpful response mechanisms.

I think that rather than saying, no doubt from the perspective of a sound psyche, that she wouldn't take antidepressants even if she were suicidal, she might adopt a more open-minded approach to some treatments, other than her own discipline, being helpful to some people some of the time. A thought-provoking article, thank you.
