Iv'e been recently diagnosed with De quervain's thyroiditis and not Graves as originally told. Would like to share information and gain knowledge and experiences from others who have been diagnosed with this condition ( known as subcute as well i think ). Thanks

I was diagnosed with graves on the verge of thyroiditis at the age of 58 which gave me hyperactive thyroid .I knew very little about the condition and was so ill went for the radioactive iodine. Big Mistake ! My condition went to hypo within 6 weeks and I piled on the pounds and went immediately to another set of symptoms then had to give up work . I am now 73 and recently had to go to the Hospital for treatment and the nurse looking up my list of illnesses asked what was De quervains as she had never heard of it. When I asked the g p she just said the side effects to R A so I presume it's all the pain I get in my arms and legs. But no endrocrinologist ever mentioned it to me and I was discharged at 60 and just taken Thyroxine ever since.

I`m sorry to here that Imelda . I was told it was 97% Graves but one of the antibodies tests came back borderline so they took a more sensitive test which was sent to a specialised lab and it came back negative !! Thank god for more advanced blood tests as my Endo had already spoke to me about operating or choosing radiation pills . The doctor who De Quervain's is named also has another condition to do with tendonitis named after him - so maybe your GP got confused with that condition - just a thought I wonder ?

Your right about the advance in the blood tests now and maybe if I were to be diagnosed today things would be a lot better. But thats science for you ! At the time I was diagnosed the N H S was in a worse mess than it is today and I didn't realise the first consultant I saw was a specialist from retirement standing in the endo department because the Professer of the department had died. Although he got me every scan and tests to decide it wasn't life threatening the treatment wasn't the right one for me. I have numerous illnesss now and my most recent which I am assured is not caused by Thyroid problems is Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis of which the only treatment is O2
