Am I imagining that a change of thyroxine brand (at same dose/ time of day) is more effective or does it's efficacy accumulate over time?

Depends on the brand - I changed from Eltroxin to Mercury Pharma generic and ended up with bad heart palps again (over medicated) as have a lot of others on this site. Some have also reported not feeling to good on this but definitely different brands can effect you in different way.

I was really well on Eltroxin but cannot seem to tolerate other brands so am now doing very well on a German brand. It took about two months for this brand to really kick in, or the other brand to leave my system, for me to really feels the benefits. Saying that it took about two months for me to realise that the MP generic was causing me problems. This is why the GP's retest new thyroid patients after six to eight weeks.

Thanks Moggie - that's really helpful.

I'm a couple of months or so into treatment myself now which may be why I am noticing a difference? Back in October my GP Pharmacy started me on Mercury Pharma & to be honest I didn't notice a huge improvement initially. (However I was dealing with my Dad's final illness etc. then which may have also effected my response to the meds?)

I'm now into my third week on Actavis & definitely feeling a lot more energy (although that may be because I'm moving through usual grief process so feeling stronger in other ways too) while noticing various "minor" issues that I'd unknowingly tolerated for a number of years are definitely showing signs of recovery...

So, it seems my current sense of wellbeing could be due to a combination of factors including the change of brand?! Can't complain; as Mr Tesco would say - every little helps!

.

:D

BTW - speaking of 6 - 8 week retests; do you think I should "fast" from my morning Levo dose that day please?

Definitely as they are measuring the amount of thyroxine "in your blood" and if you have not long taking your meds then there may be a higher level of it floating around so you could end up with a false reading.

So sorry to hear about your day and I totally believe that emotional stress can effect all things thyroid quite badly. I really do not handle emotional stress very well and this could be due to the close connection between the thyroid gland and your adrenal glands.

Thanks again - you always make sense & give such good advice!

I couldn't agree more with your comment re the mind/body link; of course our physical wellbeing effects our emotions - & vice versa. As an ex-nurse I've always felt our western medical model has a tendency to ignore (& in some cases even fear!) the emotional stuff - as a therapist now I often find myself working with individuals to rebuild their self-worth & emotional resilience which can also help improve their physical condition.

Thanks for your kind words re my Dad too - the support of others has been a great comfort & very healing.

So very sorry about my spelling mistake regarding your dad, I should have re-read my reply and now I feel very stupid and disrespectful which you know just is not me.

Yes I agree that emotional strain can definitely impact on your physical health in a big way. If I have any emotional strain then my thyroid symptoms will start to appear again.

Sorry again.

Bless you - no need to apologise, I knew you were being kind & caring as always!

I wish more people were in tune with themselves as you are - I'd have a lot more therapy clients & GPs/ A&E depts. might be less crowded!
