There is a link between untreated hypothyroidism & high cholesterol. There's also research demonstrating Hashimoto's autoimmune antibodies can be slowed from attacking the thyroid to destruction by early treatment with Levothyroxine.

There are other reasons for having antibodies, viral infection and de Quervain's, also known as 'painless' thyroiditis, can cause thyroid illness which rights itself in a few months.

Ask the GP for the print out of your results and post them with the lab ranges for comment.

You're entitled to discuss this furthet with your GP and to seek a second opinion if you aren't satisfied with his/her explanation.

Do the antibodies actually attack the thyroid?

Isn't it the lymphocytes that do that? Or have I got it wrong?

I've probably got it wrong. Antibodies are the result of the thyroid being attacked. Early intervention can slow progression, however.

Let me guess, NHS GP?

i have reduced my antibodies by 2/3 over a year by cutting out gluten and taking high dose selenium.

In fact, 18 months after going gfree - because i no longer have crippling diarrhoea daily as i did for many years, I am absorbing nutrients and meds better and am actually able to cut my ndt dose

Ref seeking a second opinion, bear in mind this lot close ranks and cover for each other like no other profession.

I always go private for a 2nd opinion.NHS will always protect its own in my esperience

If you are taking thyroid gland medication your cholesterol should reduce. Maybe you are not on an optimum dose.

Virgin Coconut Oil is another good supplement. I only took two teaspoons per day and cholesterol reduced. Some people do not like the taste but you can cook with it, put in in hot drinks etc. It is solid but melts to oil. It must be Virgin. Here is a link.

Coconut oil is also helpful for us as it raises our metabolism.

Whatever you do don't let your doctor persuade you or bully you into taking statins or anything else to reduce your cholesterol. Read Dr Malcolm Kendrick's blog to find out why :

I can also recommend his book "The Great Cholesterol Con".

Thank for the book info. My Dr said, hasimoto burned the thyroid. I can't take syn thyroid or Levo. Only armour, which shows good test results, will post when I receive a copy. Suddenly cholesterol went UP. I eat no butter, red meat, no fried foods, Dr said my liver is producing it. Has anyone tried cholestra?

Cholesterol goes up when you have an underactive thyroid. If your thyroid gets treated properly i.e. you are not under-treated, then your cholesterol will go down without you doing anything. Mine went from 8.1 down to 6.1 in 8 weeks once I started treatment. But personally, having read the book I mentioned earlier (The Great Cholesterol Con), all about cholesterol, I no longer care in the slightest what my level is!
