My G.P has also said he doubts that I will be able to fly to St. Lucia on Sunday but has not expanded on why.
I have just been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism... - Thyroid UK
I have just been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and going for first endocrinologist visit . Any advice on what to expect and what to ask?
Do you feel well enough to fly to St Lucia? You must be only mildly hyper, if so, as when I was diagnosed, I just wanted to crawl into my bed and stay there.
Ask your endo for a copy of your results and keep for future reference. Have you been given medication yet or is the endo prescribing? At this stage it is just a matter of calming down your thyroid and I expect he will simply suggest the usual treatment of Carbimazole but there are other treatments, which it would be good for you to be aware of, in case Carbimazole does not work well for you. I was never offered any alternative, so when my levels would not become stable, my endo simply advised a thyroidectomy. I am so annoyed and sorry that I went along with that, assuming it was my only choice. You now have this brilliant site and do not have to believe everything your endo suggests, without confirming it for yourself. Good luck. I hope your appointment goes well. xx
have you ASKED your gp why he said that ' he doubts whether you could go to st lucia ' and his reasons for saying that ??? it would seem rather a stupid prognosis to me at this moment , bearing in mind that you havnt been properly diagnosed or on a treatment program yet .... or is he/she just a little jealous of the fun & sun your going to get ......assert yourself and get the facts directly from him/her first .....LoL alan x p.s. hope you enjoy your holi....alan
I don't see why you couldn't go tbh. However if you are concerned ask him! It took me weeks to see endocrinologist and had no meds in meantime so just got on with life. What else is there to do? !
I agree with Hennerton-it's good to be aware that there are alternatives and that most Endos offer very limited treatment options. I was diagnosed as Hyper but after about a month went Hypo.....the Endo would have had me in and whipped out my thyroid if she had had her way. I am not suggesting this is what will happen in your case but only to illustrate that this disease has many many variations on a theme and there is no "one" solution. Read as much as you can, get copies of all your blood results, check all your levels of vits, and track your progress with some type of diary or notes so that you can monitor your own progress. In most people's experience on this site we bed to be our own best advocates. Good luck and I hope you get to go on your hols
Thanks for all your replies. Just getting ready to go,now armed with lots of questions. Fingers crossed.
Hi, maybe the GP means it could be a strain on your heart if you go to a warm climate. A couple of weeks after I got diagnosed I went to the Caribbean (I'd already booked the holiday before I got sick) and it went well, although I really needed beta blockers (but I was severely hyper) and I had to take it easy. In the mornings I would swim to regain my muscle strength, that was lovely Let us know how it went!
Cancelled the holiday to the Caribbean so planning a weekend in Bristol instead to celebrate other half's 50th. Not quite St Lucia but at least the sweating won't be as bad. Quick question I'm on carbizamole and beta blockers and want to start on noristherone?? to delay period. Is this safe? Thanks
