I don't know what to eat any more.

I'm 60 and a life long vegetarian. I have always had a good diet but since this under-active thyroid problem reared its ugly head I have found all the foods I like are on the NO list. I would love to loose weight perhaps trying a low carb. diet. So none of my cabbage friends,no almonds or favourite nuts. What is left ????

Call me Mrs. Feed-up because that is what I am. :(

From one veggie to another I definately know how this feels but I'm afraid you can get to the point with this illness that it is totally controlling you and, I dont know about you, but I am determined that this does not happen so I dont have a NO list (apart from soya) and yes the weight is still going on but when I read what some people are not eating it makes me wonder how they are surviving.

Saying that I am having gut investigation for coeliac next month and am dreading the outcome as I know if I am coeliac my NO list will turn into a NO manual.lol. Apparently its even harder to stick to a coeliac diet when you are a veggie.

Cant offer any advice this time Beaton sorry but what I will say is - be kind to yourself and eat a little of what you fancy because if you dont you'll end up a very miserable person who cant go out to lunch with friends or do lots of socialising that "normal" people do and that's no good to anyone is it?

Hi beaton - now you here ! Do not take the Brussels/broccoli/cabbage problem too seriously. Once they are well cooked they do lose most of their goitronic effect I believe. I know overcooked veg is not appealing. I over steam the broccoli and then mash it up with yogurt and spices of the moment ! Cabbage makes fab soups and we can't get brussel sprouts here in Crete - only at Christmas when they are shipped in and cost a euro each !

I too would love to lose weight and have been so careful for over three weeks - with hubby in the UK. Have lost absolutely nothing. The only carbs have come from veg and apples....oh yes and walnuts. Have been feeling odd this afternoon - lightheaded - so decided I needed some carb - sautéed onions and garlic - added the brown rice and when cooked ate it with a salmon fillet stirred in.....yummy ! Maybe it was the tennis yesterday - did too much ! - silly girl.... ! :-)

Don't be upset - make a list of ALL the things you CAN eat and see how it looks - maybe not as bad as you think..... M x

I agree with Marz - although I am not sure you need to cook it quite so much. The pros far outweigh the cons, and I am trying to find the page where I read what Marz says, that cooking destroys most if not all of the goitrogenic properties. If I can find it I'll post it here.

Could someone please fill me in on this list of forbidden foods, although as I don't have a thyroid, do I need to care, or do they affect the way we process our medication.? Thanks x

Tbh I don't take the what to eat that seriously but my IBS has improved since cutting down, not cutting out, on gluten I still eat like a weight watcher and have cut my daily calories since not working. Plus have a budget so the 3 day a week takeaways are gone. Its really one cooked meal a day plus a couple of snacks eg a banana, toast, oat crackers, cornflakes.Gluten free is pricey but there are are natural, cheaper, alternatives..Should add that I've not lost weight but haven't gained it either.

Another veggie here. I'm 63 and found that I used to put on weight looking at a glass of water. These days, I can eat more or less what I want but still take care how much I eat. Since I've been on the ERFA my weight is much better controlled.

One thing to remember, if you don't enough, you'll have less energy, do less, and therefore not burn of as many calories. And certainly don't have a 'NO' list when you are already suffering. There are far too many theories about food that can't be substantiated.

Yes Hypopotamus,I think sometimes I can be too ridged with myself.x

I've been like that in the past too. I wonder if our type of personality brings about our condition, or if the illness forms our personality? The $64,000 question. ;-)

Aim for healing the gut, try reading Dr. Campbell McBride's book Gut and Psychology available from Amazon. Clean up the gut, weight will improve as will general health, then you can find out what foods suit you, your body will let you know if you are eating medicine or poison as you will either feel good or lousy as the case may be. Have a look at gaps.me for advice and motivation.
