I'm being sent for a short sachen test ( spelling). I was hoping I might make progress but reading here I feel it might be waste of time.
Sorry you had no replies - hopefully someone with relevant experience will pick up on this in Latest Activity....

Hi Jose - did you see my post from a couple of days ago? Moggie sent some useful links
post was titled
"Synacthen Test - 1.any known side effects 2. when should adrenal suplements be stopped before test? Thanks".
I was asking on behalf of my adult son. I had a test done about 3 years ago and it showed as "normal" but I didn't know then that I could have had the exact readings before and after which might have helped with fine tuning. Will be asking my son to get copies of his!
It does rule out severe adrenal / pituitary conditions so not a complete waste of time.

Hi,,I had this few years ago,, was easy test,, came back normal...certainly not
A waste of time at all..
I had one done last month it came back adequate not sure what that means, seen dr who said it was fine but she didn't say normal. Do they really know these things?
Here is a link to the question Sarah was speaking about, which also has the link.

I was going to have a short synacthen test but consultant decided at last minute not to because I have allergies (she knew that already - duh!) and some experts advise against the test for allergenic people.
Other than that I can't comment on that particular test.
However, there are far more adrenal hormones to consider than just cortisol - which is what the short synacthen test investigates. I had to badger consultant to test me for other hormones - dhea, aldosterone, renin. And lo and behold I have come back as right on the bottom measure for dhea, and with low resting aldosterone. Now being treated.
Do your research and go well armed!!!
Good information coppernob. I had this test done a few years ago also and told it was normal. Now I have noted the other adrenal hormones you have mentioned ie dhea, aldosterone, and renin. Are these the only other adrenal hormones alongside cortisol?
As far as I know, marmaris. And btw the renin/aldo relationship controls your water/salt/potassium balance and therefore BP. I have been found to have chronically low BP, low resting aldosterone and chronic salt depletion. My kidneys are retaining virtually all my sodium. Solution? 2 tsps Swiss Bouillon/day! And repeat lolinogram in a month (24hr urine salt/water test) (designed by my endo, Prof Yvette Lolin). Only day 2 of Bouillon so early days. Though I think my head feels slightly less foggy. (Or full of Brian Frog - as we call it in 'the trade' ) Hope that helps.
