Will my voice ever return to its original sound... - Thyroid UK
Will my voice ever return to its original sound 3 months after tt and still very hoarse and sounding monotone no expression in my voice
That happened to a friend of ours. His wasn't a TT but his go icebox was damaged and for a long time he only really whispered then he had some speech therapy which helped a lot and now he has his voice back. Think that must have been about 18 months ago, I've had Graves for a year and he had that done before I had Graves. He was always a very quiet person anyway but you don't notice that he is whispering now. If you aren't already having it ask to be sent to a speech therapist for some exercises. Good luck.
I had no voice at all after my TT which lasted several weeks and then had very hoarse quiet voice for many months. Speech therapy really helped and I saw an ENT consultant who is an expert in vocal chord problems who said there is an 18 month to 2 year recovery period so it is still early days. I would ask for a speech therapy referral if this has not already happened.
thanks for the replies i see a speech therapist every week for vocal cord exercises but she is non committal as to whether my voice will return to normal she just says it will take time and be patient but i thought 3 months was long enough never mind 2 years will just have to be patient
No I think it will take a lot longer than 3 months. Very good that you are seeing a speech therapist. Just keep practising the voice exercises, I know my friend's wife stands or stood over him to make him do his every day. Hopefully time will sort you out too. Don't know what it is like for you but I noticed when our friend couldn't speak that everyone whispered to him just as he did to us. It was quite weird.
Hi Liz its really hard not to whisper, when i try to speak normal i sound like a robot, its very frustrating everyone assumes i have a sore throat and its just too much effort trying to put them right
I know, if it is any consolation we used to speak to this guy then he would whisper back to us and we would remember that he had no voice then recently we just realised that he wasn't whispering any more because his voice has come back. We were all used to having to listen carefully when he spoke.
It happened so gradually we weren't aware of his voice returning.
The thing that surprises me is that although it was only a partial thyroidectomy - they removed a benign cyst- he doesn't seem to be needing or having any levo. I was surprised at that. Whether he will need it eventually will be interesting to see.
Hi tatty10
I had TT 5 mths ago & all I could manage was a soft whisper & it was exhausting
When it started to get better I sounded like a bloke & only had a very limited range … no high notes & no low ones
Now I have pretty much a normal voice I can yell or whisper as I choose
I must admit I was worried for a while as I didn't want to sound like a bloke for the rest of my life
Patients is something people with thyroid problems need lots of as nothing is a quick fix
I wasn't offered any voice exercises or therapy so maybe I was just lucky
Hope you feel better soon
Hi my kids used to phone me up and say hello dad and still do, my voice has improved but is no where near back to normal, i am so embarrassed when i try to sing, the speech therapy has helped a great deal and taught me how to breathe properly so speaking is not so exhausting, its now 6 months after my tt I think its going to take a bit longer.
