Got asked this question yesterday by my hairdresser.......

but couldn't answer it so thought I would ask people on here to see if they are in the know.

Has anyone ever attempted a thyroid transplant and if so what was the outcome.

My hairdressers thoughts were "if they can transplant lungs, hearts and most other thing why not the thyroid".

Just a random thought. I doubt they'd try it because you would need to take powerful immuno suppressant drugs. You can live without a thyroid and many people here do just that after a TT, as you can take the missing hormones it would have produced. It's harder to live without lungs or a heart.

I know it would be no good for someone with hashi's as I assume the body would just attack the new thryoid but wondered about thyroid sufferers without hashi's.

One of the members thought of this quite a long time ago. He mentioned it to me at the last Thyroid Conference. His name is Brian don't know his surname.

Thought I read somewhere about thyroid stem cell therapy, just googled and found this. Been successful in mice now need trials for humans.

why have a thyroid transplant when you can live 'happily ever after' on thyroxine? ;)
