Hi Scott47,

going up in dosage in itself will not 'stop' your operation, however they will want to make sure your thyroid hormone levels are 'stable' before they proceed, at least that is what they 'usually' want. You should call your surgeon's secretary and tell her/him that you would like to ask as this is 'worrying you'.

I have had a gastric bypass 'before' I was diagnosed hypothyroid, to be honest my operation went REALLY well and I had NO complications, however on hindsight if I knew back then I was hypothyroid I would have NOT had the surgery as now 6 years later it is doing NOTHING to help me lose weight or maintain the weight and it is giving me malabsorption of all nutrients, I have to be on high doses of iron, vitamin D, vitamin B12, all vitamins and minerals and despite this I constantly 'struggle' not to have any deficiencies. the NHS is useless in keeping an eye on my vitamins and minerals and they prescribe me the bare minimum with which I am still deficient (am seeing someone today from a new bariatric team to see if they will prescribe what I buy out of my own pocket to keep me non deficient).

Of course you will hear many people who have never regretted having the operation, but I do, as now that my hypothyroidism is well controlled on T3 medication I can control my weight myself, something I could never do before, not even with TWO weight loss surgeries.
