I did read of a link somewhere - I think they share a blood supply ..... Also it is interesting that removing tonsils it is not as fashionable as it was in the 50's - I wonder why ? Constant tonsillitis can be the body telling you something is going on in the neck - my youngest daughter suffered at least three attacks a year and is now without a thyroid.

Did not have tonsillitis after having a sub-total thyroidectomy, after having it at least twice a year from the age of 4.

You support my very private non-medical thoughts that when the thyroid is inflamed then the inflammation will spread to other areas of the throat. Thank you for replying..... x

Oh wow what a revelation. I had my tonsils out in 1959 at 7, I was extremely ill with all sorts of infections for years before they operated, OMG that explains so much ..xx I think I must have been born with Graves Disease but not diagnosed until the antibodies attacked my eyes and thyroid, I now understand that all my ops could be connected, appendix out in 1967, ovaries kept getting cysts, several ops for that, then in Dec 2007 they were totally removed because of massive cysts, I have a beautiful scar from my navel to my pubes!!!! My gallbladder is next on the list due to very painfull gallstones, and I am having my bowels investigated Sept5th because of severe pain around my appendix scar and prolapsed bowel ......when will it ever end I am constant pain..I have headache and dizzy spells all the time..

Tish4 and Tish27 xx I wish you all the very best xxx

Well, it looks like I am bucking the trend here as I still have my tonsils completely intact!!! In fact, my two older sisters both had their tonsils removed as children and neither of them has any thyroid issues. Only thing I have had removed is my appendix!

My 2 sisters and I still have tonsils but all have thyroid disease, 2 of us since teen years before any other unrelated medical issues came about, so thyroid probs came first for us.

Dr. Barry Durrant-Peatfield has always said that it's a barbaric op and that can interfere with the thyroid. I can't remember now, but he may have mentioned it in his book.

I used to get tonsillitis as a child but my mother would not let them remove mine.

I still managed to become hypothyroid! :-(

Could be that the 'itís' in your tonsils was indicating an 'itis'elsewhere.....very non-medical but just a thought ! :-)

I had my tonsils out when I was 13 due to constant bouts of tonsillitis and became hypo in my 30's. However my daughter still has hers and became hypo when she was 16. I have read that it can be linked to damage in the next area but also it can pass down the maternal line.

Thank you for all the responses I was just interested an that I'd seen it somewhere but not sure .... My dad had also passed with non hodkinsons lymphoma and I knew that was related somehow

I had my tonsills out when I was only 4. I kept getting sore throats, & my mother pressured our gp into reffering me for the operation. I feel somewhat annoyed about this because I think that she overreacted to illnesses that would have been sorted out with a course of antibiotics. I now wonder if I`m having to take thyroxine today beccause of what was nothing more than a silly medical fad in the 1950`s.

I'm hypo and I still have my tonsils! My sister had hers removed and has no thyroid problems.

I suffered with tonsilitis very badly in my twenties then again in my forties. At fifty I had recurrent peritonsilar abcess, therefore I bit the bullet and had the one offending tonsil out. I would rather give birth 3 times over than go through that pain. Morphine never touched it.

However on the good side now the constant infection has gone my thyroid is running more smoothly, I am on NDT.

Hashimotos17 years now along with PA.

But yes I wonder if all those bouts of tonsillitis got me on my way to thyroid disease. Who knows. The whole thyroid and pernicious anaemia thing has beena difficult journey and a battle to keep well.

So gratefulfor thyroid UK and TPA and PA society and all you guys because with out the support it's a lonely battle.

But never give in.

God bless 😊

My Mum and I have both had our tonsils removed. My daughter aged 18 now had bad tonsils all through her childhood days. Then a herbalist mentioned it was low stomach acid causing it. Gave her some herbs and it completely stopped, no more problems. It stopped her singing career and the doctors never picked it up, just prescribed more and more antibiotics. Mum and I are hypothyroid and if my daughter has low stomach acid it now makes me wonder if she has a thyroid problem although not manifesting itself yet but starting with low stomach acid, she was always getting hiccups and belching at the same time, a most weird noise. But that has disappeared. Perhaps all the tonsil problems were low stomach acid, which opened up the upper stomach sphincter allowing a regurgitation. Now I think about it I used to regurgitate a bit and have billious attacks my Mum called them when I was a child. An interesting point.
