Hi Owen. Welcome to the site.

Sorry to hear you have hyperthyroidism but good that you have a diagnosis. It's tough though and understandably worrying.

I was almost the same age as you when I was diagnosed and was extremely ill after a late diagnosis. i got better and so can you but I have to be honest and say ot was not an easy journey. However, Hyperthyroidism if left untreated can quickly become very serious and life threatening if you have a thyroid storm so no treatment is not an option. Carbimozol saved my life. Yes - I did have some hair loss but I was losing hair before I took carbimozole so sometimes it can actually he caused by the thyroid condition and not necessarily the medication. Whatever it doesnt happen to everyone - we are all different. The good news is that my hair grew back so it was not permanent.

I wish I could say something more positive to help you but you have found a good site with people that will answer your questions and support you through this.

Keep posting and good luck.

I've been on 20mg carbimazole for 3 weeks ish now. No massive side effects and feeling better now than I did before...admittedly not by a lot but still! Bloods in a couple of weeks to see what the score is. Read up as much as you can. Good luck :)

Hi Owen, I would take the Carbimazole if I were you, I was severely hyper when I was first diagnosed and I felt SO ill. My heart was pounding so much I felt like I was having a heart attack, my hands shook so much I couldn't coordinate them enough to be able to put toothpaste on my toothbrush, I had I go to bed by half past six every night because I was so tired and loads of other horrible symptoms. Carbimazole stopped all that. You definitely don't want to get like I was. I've lost some hair but it has thinned out all over so although I know it is thinner other people don't know that.

Good luck, Liz :-)

Hi Owen, i have been taking carbimazole for 12 weeks now the only side effect i have is some hair loss and aches and pains in my legs, but feeling much better than i did before, now i am awaiting a date for surgery for a total thyroidectomy, you really should take these tablets they will help, and you will only feel worse if you dont, good luck x

Hi Owen please do take the tablets as in my experience you will lose more hair if you are hyper than if you use carbimazole. I have been on them for 2 years now and they have saved my life literally. There are only 2 lots of meds for hyperthyroidism or there is surgery or RAI.

If you do not take the meds then there is a good chance that you will become very ill indeed.

It is a difficult disease and one that give you very few options. i know that losing your hair is no fun as mine thinned at the beginning before the meds. It is now back to normal pretty much. It can and does grow back.

Good luck and do take them.

Take the Carbimazole, they could save your life as you will only get sicker without. Once your thyroid is stabilised you can look at lifestyle changes. Minimising stress and eating as healthily as possible are really the best things we can do for our thyroids alongside the medical intervention.

I've been on the Carb for almost a year now and have NO side effects (that I know of). And believe me when I say if there is a rare side effect of medication I will normally be the first to get it! (I would not have minded some hair loss tbh as I look like Chewbacca at the best of times, although perhaps an Ewok is closer as I am so short). The Carb stopped my excruciating bone and muscle pain; I was in pain for a very long time. I had IBS before and it has been aggravated since taking the Carb but I can cope with that for a few more weeks, Anything is better than feeling like I'd been hit by a bus, then reversed over.
