hello. I’m booked in at Mount Vernon hospital on November 14th for RAI. I’m totally rubbish at swallowing tablets so they have agreed to give it to me as a liquid. I’m now getting anxious it may be a massive beaker full and May taste disgusting

Has anyone else had it this way and if so what was your experience of it. Also has anyone else has RAI at Mount Vernon and knows what uou can and can’t take in with you

Thanks in advance

I had RAI at Mount Vernon 21 years ago. Very spartan room. Drink, drink and drink (water) to get it out of your system as soon as possible. Have the shower when allowed and take lots of reading matter (which will be destroyed afterwards, as you don't take it out of the room). I had small children at the time, so difficult not to give any cuddles when I got home and I slept in a separate bed from my husband for some time. You should be given a sheet with all the details you need. I don't think it was too bad, very boring though. It will be fine, best wishes.

I had it many times and if I had my time again I would say no to all. I had it each time through a straw from a metal container. Once you're in the room you're there on your own. So take in good books, cd's, audio books, things to write, draw, learn. All clothes are put into plastic bags. Meals are left at the door. No staff come into the room. No food is taken out of the room. It helps if you have a laptop or mobile to contact family and friends as it can get lonely. I was allowed to take my things home after they checked them for radiation after the week.

Thank you. Im starting to stress about how much there is to drink and how revolting it will taste. I know its daft but if you can let me know I like to be prepared as to what I am in for. You say you would say no to all. Do you mean no to the RAI or no to having it as a liquid?

Hi

As we are after November how did it go? The RAI?

Have you had your thyroid removed?

I was found to have thyroid cancer papillary cancer and this was removed by a surgeon who also removed 12 right lymph nodes. 2 were affected.

I am having my 3rd neck scan Feb - so far all clear.

I refused RAI as I was at Low Risk and refused being in suppression.

My surgeon, myself following Gary Clayman's advice (Top surgeon Thyroid in USA centre) agree that I should stay at 1.8-2.0 TSH.

Hi Joy2theworld49

The RAI had to be cancelled and has been rescheduled for 13 February. I had lung cancer and thyroid cancer both primary and both only found by total chance after a routine scan. I had a lung lobe removed in March and then my entire thyroid removed in May. I had chemo for my lung cancer during July, August and September and then a scan with contrast in October to see if it all looked clear. Unfortunately when I had my planning meeting for the RAI I was asked if I had had a scan within the last 6 weeks and as I had and it was with contrast they couldnt do the RAI until the contrast was totally out of my system so it has been rebooked for February which then meant my follow up Lung scan has had to be cancelled. As I am under two oncologists (lung and thyroid) they have agreed that they need to work together to avoid things like this happening again.

So far I am feeling well despite being supressed. Hope you are staying well and all clear too xx

Hi

Oh you too have been through a lot.

Have you had your thyroid and lymph nodes out?

I would say to anyone who has thyroid cancer have it removed. some are having the thyroid destroyed instead.

I would visualise the cancer in the thyroid first.

At my Chemist, a friend of a friend has just had RAI and been given too much RAI.

I went to the film Radio Active. I'll say no more.

Also it makes it difficult to regulate your thyroxine after. In your case yo may need some after thyroidectomy but not much.

It destroys cells of the thyroid but it can damage more.

Sorry to scare you but the best surgeon is needed for you. Read up on Gary Clayman USA thyroid surgeon.

My surgeon put through a blue dye 1 hour before operation so it was better to leave my voice box leads and other various parts alone. Reading Atlas of Head and Neck by Gary Clayman illustrates what can get in the way.

Believe me read all about it. I had nothing before the operation.

Suppression prevents cancer from growing. What type do you have?

Prayers your way. Cheri JOY. 73v. (NZ)

Please let us know how you are doing. Don't go into toxicity with suppression.
