Salad - Good apparantly

I have IBS for years and its been behaving recently and an IBD.

I have noticed in the last 6 months or more I am bloated from a basic salad, containing tomatoes, cucumber, peppers and lettace or spinach with chicken or chickpeas (home cooked).

Has anyone else had any irritation from salad before? I struggle pinpointing what it is as i don't like anything less in it.

I struggle with salad now and I used to eat it every day years ago no bother. Tomatoes, Chickpeas are high in Histamaines so I stopped them. Cucumber is ok if I peal it and remove the seeds, Peppers, they tend to be ok if I don't have too much, but I'm suspecting Lettuce now. I only have one leaf. It's difficult trying to pin point salads, I love it too, it's so unfair isn't it? Try swapping one or two things, I have grated carrots, cooked peas rinsed after in cold water, grated beetroot, it's a case of trying things one by one; 😉

I am sorry to hear your the same, I have heard about people peeling cucumber before but never thought about it for me. I will try that and like you and XJRS said i need to cut them out and do a food diary.

Unfortunately, I've not been able to eat salad for years. The only way to find out which component(s) are troubling you is to cut one of them out and keep a food diary of what you have eaten and check for symptoms up to 4 days afterwards - it might be less than this if you normally react more quickly. Then cut the next one out and do the same. This is the best way to still keep certain foods in your diet, rather than give a blanket ban on all salad items.

I've kept a food diary for years and have Never managed to pin point any problem foods. I can eat something one week and be OK, then the same next week and it will upset me. Look up the fodmap diet. I have found that helpful. As a celiac I was already used to gluten free. You may just look at the good and bad fruit and veg to start with.

It’s a long shot but try changing the leaves in the salad. Iceberg lettuce is a trigger for me. No idea why but I switched to mixed leaves of spinach etc and I’m now able to eat salads. Chickpeas might be the issue in your salad but I thought I would mention the least likely ingredient could be responsible. Best of luck.

I eat spinach with baby salad leaves packet so maybe i should try lettuce. Ill try different leaves first before trying to liminate other ingredients. Trial and error again for me.

Thanks

Since a long time I tried eating some salad (nearly 200 grams / 7 ounces) again to find out what it does with my gut. Now it seems I am more constipated 🥴. I was diagnosed with IBS C. Low fibre, low fat, plain food and small meals during works best for my intestines till now.

Even though its sad to hear others suffer to its good to know im not the only one. It took me ages to post as (it feels) everyone promotes salad and never speaks badly of them.

I think I will try some mixed salad again (the same meal I ate and made me constipated), but now in combination with the medication (trial with SimAlvia) I got prescribed lately for my functional bloating. The mixed salad also came with some chicken meat and pasta. This meal was about 450 grams / 16 ounces. I also have to mind that I eat half a meal, so less salad than the first time. Maybe the medication helps I'll just have to find out the hard way, unfortunately.
