Hi I have started taking low dose (10mg) Amitriptyline each evening(about a month now) but as i've just had one of the worst bouts ever wondered if it is just making matters worse by creating more constipation, has anyone else out there with IBSm or IBSc has had success with it or has it just made things worse ? I know there are some positive results for those with IBSd

Hi Buggins, I have slow motility and was put on Imipramine which is similar to Amitryptiline and slowly increased the dosage and it was effective at significantly reducing my pain but it was intolerable and not suitable for a slow moving gut, as it caused more problems and I would rather have the pain, which I am learning to cope with more naturally than blocking it and not addressing the problem. Anyway good luck if you want to try, it may work for you without the side effects, I hope so, keep us posted.

best wishes Mutley

Hi Mutley have tried it for about a month and already given up as i I've had one of the worst flare ups ever and the side effects were too much, I concur that that they are not suitable with a slow moving gut (wish I'd realised before but you get a little desperate to find something that works!!)

I have IBSC and it's helped me. Probably cos it helped the anxiety. I'm not sure.

Hi, I started using it 3 months ago and feel it has made a difference. Still have pain at times but not as often as before. I haven’t really had any side effects.

I started using Nortriptyline three months ago - one 10mg one night and 20mg following night - and it has worked brilliantly for me. Sometimes a little constipation but not badly. No IBS and have stopped avoiding gluten.
