AMITRYPTILINE
I take Amitriptyline and I have found that it has helped my IBS-D. Whereas I used to have to go to the toilet several times a day I now go once every couple of days unless I’m having a flare up. It can affect people differently but, for me, it’s been very good for my IBS
i guess everyone is different but it has been a godsend for me. I used to go between ibs c and d but as time went on it was mainly ibs d that got so bad i was afraid to leave the house. On a much more even keel now.
The question is has your IBS got worse since starting Amitriptyline? If yes , then speak to the GP about getting an alternative to it or getting something else to take alongside the Amitriptyline to reduce the increase in the IBS.
Everyone can have their own response to a new drug , everyone is different. What is a miracle to one person can be like murder to another.
Sometimes your IBS may just play up for a week while your body gets used to taking a new chemical then it settles down so you might want to consider how long you have taken it , or if the symptoms have got very bad before changing the drug . Other times it can be an intolerance and a medication that will irritate you so you do need to change it.
I would say my IBS with Constipation, particularly gut spasms and pain got worse with Amitriptyline, but that is because I have found I have an intolerance to triptans and tricyclic medication.
Any medication or supplement can cause a temporary or long term change in IBS because we have to process it in the intestines and liver so if it is usually stomach conditions that get triggered first.
unfortunately I don’t get on very well with antidepressants at all they tend to make me hyper and the side effects are awful.
It could be that you don't tolerate Amitriptyline as well. Many people , including myself , have tricyclic medication intolerance and can't take any drugs in the Tricyclic Class if drugs. It might be worth checking which antidepressants you have used in the past and then look up which class of drugs they come under by putting the name into a Google search .It could help you find a nerve relaxant , antispasmodic or antidepressants that isn't it one of those classes which may be better for you to try , and if you are offered a medication in a class drugs you don't tolerate you can explain why you can't take it.
Hi Lamly!
I’ve found Amitryptiline made my ibs worse, it caused my anxiety to rise which triggered my IBS symptoms more, which is the same with most anti-depressants in my case especially sertraline!
It can cause constipation
hi I had ibs d amitriptyline was my life saver. Been on it 20+years but I’ve started struggling with constipation the last year but everyone time I try to come off it can’t take the stomach cramps. I take 35mg hope this helps
Amitriptyline can be quite effective for IBS diarrhea type, so worth trying. If you decide to take it, ask you your doctor about the anticholinergic properties of the drug which are not good for cognition.
i have been given this drug but as i work in healthcare,my colleagues told me it was referred to as the "devils drug" and not to take it,I have now started taking silicolgel to see if its any good as mebeverine is useless, also i drive for a living so i dont think amitriptyline is good for me
It made my IBS much worse, but Amitryptiline is well known for causing constipation and evil to come off it.
